The plan is to continue the "redone" chart all the way to 2001 and it's being done in two streams, with my other one at 1991, so about 8 years to go until this one meets up with that one.
1982 took a long time to complete and 1983 will take even longer because we have now a UK top 100, and it has moved to being one week ahead of the UK chart now.
Thus 1983 hits the ground running

I also said I would revive the runs of Malcolm McLaren and the Jam who both were caught at the wrong side of what was a strong week for entries and what was not.
Of the new entries, Wham! are back and we also have the Fun Boy Three with a track I don't remember (the one I do definitely remember from the start of 1983 is on the next playlist) and a Special AKA song (which I've never heard before).
Of the two entries, the ones by Runrig and Nevada are clearly seasonal so don't expect either to have a long run. But there are loads of new ones coming up.

Alan Parsons Project enter at #7 with "Old & Wise" after only reaching #74 in the UK chart which will be where it peaks. But this isn't a new discovery, I bought it at the time. Alan Parsons had been the producer of "Music" by John Miles and this single features Colin Blunstone on lead vocals.
The 3rd hit for Haysi Fantayzee but at the time for me only the second, "Holy Joe" having completely passed me by. "Electric Avenue" reached #2 in the UK following his #1 but in the USA this was his biggest hit also peaking at #2. But the regular version is not on Spotify as is the case with most Eddy Grant singles.
After releasing cover versions, the Belle Stars finally release their own material and get their biggest hit with it. For some reason I always associate the Level 42 and China Crisis singles of the time, maybe because of the Chinese/China association between the two.
The intro to "One On One" was heavily sampled by something - it formed the entire basis of that song but I can't recall what and it may have been something relatively obscure (other than in my chart) because searching the normal "who sampled what" doesn't reveal anything. It comes up with other tracks that sampled "One On One" but not the one I'm looking for.

U2's big breakthrough - Fire (#36), Gloria (#23) and A Celebration (#39) have charted previously but this ones big, and in the UK also reached #10, far higher than the 3 mentioned above.
Also big breakthrough for Prince. He had one previous hit "I Wanna Be Your Lover", #18 in 1979. Surprisingly 1999 wasn't a hit in the USA, and only became a sizable UK hit in 1985.
And they didn't quite last as long as the two above but the Thompson Twins got their first UK top 10 hit.
Below those a UK #1 for Kajagoogoo, and there's an R&B entry at #23 - but "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" is such a classic.
The Jam had a bunch of their singles enter the chart after they split, and I decided to take advantage by charting "Dreams Of Children" which previously was a double A-side with "Going Underground" but uncredited on here. I considered "A Bomb In Wardour Street" and "Precious" too but decided to just go for this one.

The song isn't on Spotify, Kitty Woodson is credited on it, so I could mention her. When I try to locate the track I put in less rather than more, it helps me find it better.

Alan Parsons Project move up to #1 whilst Michael Jackson gets the highest new entry with the song that really started his total superstar status as a solo artist in my opinion. "Off The Wall" was ok as an album but "Thriller" was massive, and this song (rather than The Girl Is Mine) really got it going.
The 5th highest entry was on today's Heardle Decades.

I didn't recall "The More I See (The Less I Believe)", but now their big hit "Tunnel Of Love" enters for the Fun Boy Three as the highest entry.
The big breakthrough for Aztec Camera, whose biggest hit would be 5 years later.
A few uninspired covers that didn't make it listed at the bottom, but in 1991 Kenny Thomas had a hit "Outstanding" and the original version is charting this week for the Gap Band. UB40 get an entry but as you well know they had a massive hit in 1983 with a cover version with the original artist and songwriter also coming up with a new hit soon.
The Stargazers who enter the chart are not the 1950s band who appeared on my first chart, "Twenty Tiny Fingers" was #5 on 31 December 1955 but showing as #3 the previous week, probably behind "Rock Around The Clock" and "Sixteen Tons".

When I do retro charts it's "Christmas" for me whenever they reach December regardless of what month it actually is. So I had Christmas 1982 around the start of May 2023.
My other "retro" year is 1991 but I don't post the charts on here until we get to them in the official "retro" chart. My own playlist is at the end of August.
I'm now doing 2 weeks per playlist on both. January 1983 has proved very strong and so will February be but the first two weeks of March are underwhelming. The Belle Stars appearing to miss the top 10 here just because there are so many big ones (I think it was 8th or 9th on my playlist)

There were a few acts around this period who had a number one, then a few smaller hits and then disappeared after a short time. I'm thinking of Musical Youth, Men At Work and Kajagoogoo. The former had a second top 10 hit that is probably not so well remembered but actually they wrote themselves which perhaps makes it more special.
The Jo Boxers made a slow climb in the lower part of the chart then eventually it took up and spent a week at #3, albeit that was its only week in the top 5. Maybe they just got lucky... They get the second entry this week.
And behind those the Eurythmics - this song is considered possibly their most classic but it never was for me. "Love Is A Stranger" peaked at NM #2 a couple of months ago.

"If You Wanna Be Happy" is amazing song. Chartrun : 2-3-4-5-6-10-10-13-16-18-20 And in my chart: 10-3-3-6-12-20-29. For Jimmy Soul that is in 1963.

Actually one of the two songs above Jimmy Soul's version that week was "From Me To You" by the Beatles.
It does make more sense to cover a song 20 years old that the new generation won't know, rather than one just 9 years old (Rock The Boat) or 13 years old (Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye), the former of those without actually really changing anything, as at least you're introducing it to a new generation. "Rock The Boat" also peaked at #3 in my chart in its original version. Bananarama didn't change the gender on their cover so they still sing "kiss him goodbye". The original of that only reached NM #15.

This is where the "time-shift" seems to show as OCC will have Bonnie Tyler as entering on 19 February and only at #49 so it didn't reach the top 40 until the following week at which point the chart was 26 February and on that chart date originally it did enter at NM #1. It's been "hit and miss" for Bonnie Tyler, 4 singles, 2 top 5 hits and 2 that failed to chart at all prior to this one. Since she was last in the chart with "It's A Heartache", Jim Steinman has scored 3 number ones as a songwriter for Meat Loaf including "Paradise By The Dashboard Light", the number one of all time (which will never be toppled). That single was primarily credited to a male vocalist (Meat Loaf) with Ellen Foley also providing vocals. "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" is credited to a female vocalist (Bonnie Tyler) but also has contributions from Rory Dodd (he sings "turn around" sometimes with "bright eyes" added and the second "forever's gonna start tonight" but she sings pretty much all the rest). There's a longer version and a shorter version but for me the definitive version is always the one that's used in the video.
A bunch of other "massive" entries. Styx and Madness included and also OMD. Like Bonnie Tyler, Joan Armatrading first appeared around 1976 and has been intermittent in her hits and the style of them but this is another "rock chick" song.
Orange Juice's classic "Rip It Up", their only UK top 40 hit, and Edwyn Collins also had exactly one UK top 40 hit which reached the top 10 but both had others peaking outside the top 40.
Remember Haven Factor 9? Cliff Richard and Blancmange were both in it, Cliff Richard ended up a double-elimination sing-off early on after playing "She Means Nothing To Me" but survived it. Blancmange got into a sing-off in the album round that followed and should have been up against Cliff but unjustly that wasn't the case.
Other than those, Kissing The Pink were pretty much one-hit wonders (did they make any other songs?), but the Bluebells are better known for a different song. This one came back eventually in 1984 and scraped the UK top 40.
Chas & Dave will only have sport-related hits after this one, including "When The Year Ends In One" for Tottenham in 1991 which took the tune from "London Girls" and set it to new lyrics.

My 1983 chart is very fast in comparison with other years.
'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' spent only six weeks in "Gražios Dainos" (Run : 2-2-1-5-8-15), possibly it's a lowest number for # 1 song.

Total Eclipse Of The Heart is one of my "big 8" songs by solo female vocalists, which date in year over a range of 40 years. The first is right at the end of 1972 and the last right at the very end of 2012. The others are from 1978, 1981, 1983 (Total Eclipse Of The Heart), 1988, 1995 and 2009.

Right artist, wrong song. It's the original release of Breathe In Breathe Out from Candlelight EP which was still on youtube last time I looked but removed from Spotify and never put back.
The 8 artists who appear on the list are Carly Simon, Kate Bush, Hazel O'Connor, Bonnie Tyler, Debbie Gibson, Alanis Morissette, Polly Scattergood and Tich

Not doing so well as they did in the UK, the cover versions by Bananarama and Forrest which reached #5 and #4 respectively. The original Hues Corporation version of Rock The Boat reached NM #3 but Steam themselves only managed NM #15 with Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. (By the way, why didn't Bananarama change the gender?)
