Later this week, Sigur Rós are kicking off a 41-piece orchestra tour, their first world tour in nearly five years. Back when it was announced, they promised that a new album would arrive in June. Today, they’re sharing their first new track since 2016, “Blóðberg.” It’s the first track since Kjartan Sveinsson rejoined the band; he left in 2012 before the release of 2013’s Kveikur. It features the London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ames, and was mixed and co-produced by Paul Corley.

The definition of a slow burner! But rather lovely. Great to have them back.

Had my first listen of the whole thing now.
I think they did the right thing with the surprise release - after a 10-year gap expectations would have been ridiculously high, and while I enjoy this one a lot, anyone going into it expecting a career-defining masterpiece is likely going to be a bit disappointed. It's very stripped back and sparse - there's pretty much no percussion, for one thing, and there are no big anthemic tracks like on their previous albums, but given the context of what they've been dealing with over the past few years, it makes total sense. A quieter album, maybe their most introspective yet, but really beautiful in places too.
