Defending champions USA scrape through to the last 16 after a goalless draw against Portugal, who hit the post in stoppage time. Netherlands win the group after putting 7 past Vietnam. USA now face a potential last 16 clash with FIFA's no.3 ranked team Sweden.

And what a performance by England, or maybe China were just p*ss poor? And 2 out of 3 VAR went against us well, never offside unless I misunderstand the offside rule about phases of play and interference, and also never a penalty. And the ref looked at both on the screen and made the wrong decision, so I hope she is not reffing any more (important) games. She was yards offside but I don’t think she gained anything from it. My French isn’t good enough to tell what the commentators said about it.

She was yards offside and didn't interfere with any players until the next phase of play when it touched a chinese player by which point she was onside, but I'm assuming they're saying that wasn't a deliberate touch so she's still offside? No idea. Strikers are offside behind defenders all the time, they make the defender play the ball, and then come and get the ball and they're not offside? Anyway, it doesn't matter and wont get talked about because of the scoreline, but stopped a lovely goal. Oh and just seen the Dutch 3rd and 6th goals, beautiful!

The daftest thing about the offside goal is that it needn’t have happened. It was “scored” after the four signalled minutes of stoppage time were up. The incident meant they ended up with over eight minutes stoppage time. At the end of the second half the referee didn’t add anything to the 11 minutes signalled, choosing not to prolong the agony for China.

Jamaica reach the knockout stages for the first time after picking up the point they needed against Brazil. The career of Brazilian legend Marta, the all-time leading World Cup scorer, comes to an anticlimactic end after she was subbed off in the latter stages. France top the group after overcoming a spirited Panama.

South Africa win a thriller to reach the last 16 and knock out Italy. It was their first ever win at the World Cup. Sweden finish top after a routine win over Argentina, whose winless run at the World Cup is now 12 games.

The group stage reached a dramatic conclusion as two-time champions Germany went out in the first round. They'd made at least the quarter-finals of every previous competition but could only manage a draw against South Korea, while Morocco beat Colombia, hanging on for dear life in the closing stages. Morocco are the only one of the eight debutants to make it out of the group stage while Colombia reach the last 16 for the second time, having done so in 2015.

Germany knocked out by South Korea; the draw opening up for England; Colombia in the same quarter with the hosts a potential semi final opponent... Getting strong Men's WC2018 vibes here.

Netherlands were a little lucky there, if SA had better finishing, or a better gk, then they might have got something from that game, also good saves by the Dutch gk.

Sweden were terrible in that game, but if you dont score you dont win, and that has been the USAs problem. What a penalty shootout though! Was it three kicks the US missed, and then to win it where the US gk makes a double save, but it's a centimetre over the line when she clawed it back the 2nd time, incredible! Pleased the US are out. Sp Spain Netherlands and Japan Sweden. Should be Japan and Netherlands winning that, but we shall see.
