That was a great shootout.
I've seen a few predictable comments about the supposed low excitement about this world cup. Of course this is partly due to the remote location leading to matches during the night or in the morning - however, I don't think the organisers are helping themselves by seemingly drawing the kickoff times out of a hat.
All eight last 16 matches had different kick off times, as do the four quarter finals. Even the semi finals kick off at 9am and 11am on different days.
Of course the timezones have to do with this, but that was the case with Euro 2020, and we still had matches at the same time each day.

It's always going to be a problem holding a World Cup in multi time zones and which audience do you cater for. The local audience or the global audience. Not sure if something similar happened in the 1994 World Cup in USA, where some matches were held on opposite ends of the country, although I'm sure someone old enough can confirm. Euro 2020 you could get away with, as a 9pm kick off in mainland Europe is usually the norm and mainly catering for a European audience. On the USA vs. Sweden match, USA were by far the better team in the match and probably should have won, had it not been for the Swedish GK and her heroics. Good shootout too, however the missed pens were poor penalties, especially the one from Sophia Smith to win the tie.

Nigeria definitely deserved to win there. Great for England to go through, although they might miss Lauren James for the rest of the tournament after that stamp. Heroine to zeroine?

Shades of Sweden vs USA, where the better team went out. Lucky for England. Nigeria should have had a pen in extra time.
Some good pens from England though in the shootout.
Hopefully Lauren James can reign in her arrogance after that incident. Completely ineffective in the game, thanks to a good game plan from Nigeria. With her suspended, QF match could be a struggle again.

Also kudos to the Nigeria player for not reacting by screaming and rolling around like a petulant child after the Lauren James stamp.

Fair play to Nigeria, they play the game in the right way. Just a bit lacking up front. Very difficult to beat (three 0-0 draws in this tournament) but difficult to go deep into a tournament without goals.
Colombia will be different if they beat Jamaica as they'll try and kick the sh*t out of England.

Jamaica haven't conceded a goal yet, should be an interesting game, both will be tough for us if this performance is anything to go by. Having now watched the highlights, chances wise it seems fairly even? BBC Stats has shots as 12 v 20 in favour of Nigeria, but on target is 4 v 2 in our favour, although that might exclude the two crossbar hits as that's not on target!

USA's exit means that this year's final will be the first not to feature either USA or Germany (in fact, every previous final featured exactly one of the two).

It was a red card, but it wasn't a stamp, she deliberately stupidly trod on her, a stamp involves force. Games look good today, wish I could have watched them while working from home, but will be travelling instead.

Didn't touch the ball. Didn't attempt to touch the ball. Didn't prevent the defender from trying to touch the ball. Only grounds for offside are whether she caused the keeper to be unsighted and based on the (somewhat inconclusive) still above, it was the keeper's own defenders that were preventing her from having a clear view. The view shown from inside the goal demonstrates this much more clearly.
