A 1974 song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, it was originally recorded by Frankie Valli's group The Four Seasons. However, they were caught up in legal shenanigans trying to get out of their existing record label. But a loophole allowed their lead singer to rerecord the track (with his band as the session musicians) and release it on an independent record label as a solo single. This mellow ballad was a USA #1 UK #5 Australia #3 Canada #2 hit. It was replaced at #1 in the USA singles chart by...

Chicago born jazz soul singer Minnie Riperton started in the music industry as a teenager supplying (backing) vocals to many Chess recordings (including Fontella Bass "Rescue Me"). Riperton reached the apex of her career with her USA #1 UK #2 Canada #3 & Australia #5 single "Lovin' You". The Stevie Wonder produced single was the last release from her 1974 USA top 5 gold album titled Perfect Angel. Unfortunately in January 1976 she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which killed her in July 1979, aged just 32 years old.

The Philadelphia soul group formed in 1968 fronted by falsetto singer, Russell Thompkins Jr, were at UK #6 with "Sing Baby Sing" & at UK #1 with The Best Of The Stylistics. As their USA success faded, they focused more on Europe, and were very successful here in the mid 1970s. So I'm going to go back and post their early 1972 USA #3 UK #13 hit "Betcha By Golly Wow" (covered by Prince in the mid 1990s).

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is the ninth studio album by English musician Elton John. The album is an autobiographical account of the early musical careers of Elton John (Captain Fantastic) and his long-term lyricist Bernie Taupin (the Brown Dirt Cowboy). It became the first album to debut at USA #1 (it reached Canada #1 & Australia #1), and debuted at its UK #2 peak. So I'm posting the brilliant title track.
