Here we are then, here’s the volume I received….
Depeche Mode – Policy of Truth
Always been a bit weird towards the Mode, sometimes – ‘Never Let Me Down Again’, ‘Strangelove’ – I think they were actually a pretty nifty pop act….yet on others – ‘People Are People’, ‘I Feel You’- I want to ram Gore and Gahn’s heads into a Basildon skip… This is in the first category. The album it’s from is called ‘VIOLATOR’ John, NOT something else…
Natalie Imbruglia – Beauty on the Fire
Yeah this is not at all bad…..maybe she’s trying a bit hard to be ‘real’ on it….but good no nonsense tune, certainly better than the totally false ‘angst’ of ‘That Day’ anyway
Sinead Quinn – Ready to Run
Hmmm, a bit tough to be harsh to this when you know what it’s about,,,
….the kindest thing I can say is that it isn’t for me at all…
Alex Lloyd – Green
The one you REALLY wanted my opinion on…and yeah, it’s a very good record. There’s a real sense of yearning in his voice which I really like….Chris Martin would weep if he heard this…..Dare I say it, I’d like to hear more?
The Verve – So Sister
No thanks;) ‘Gravity Grave’ from their beardy psychedelia phase was good, but everything after that was just coffee table ‘alternative’ dross…sorry;)
3 Colours Red – Beautiful Day
Now HERE’S an interesting one! 3CR were the first band I ever really became a ‘fan’ of, when I was at the tender age of 14. A friend asked if I wanted to go and see them, my mum wouldn’t let me cos I was “too young”, but she bought me their album ‘Pure’ instead;) I still know EVERY word of that record too….. This was their first single from their second album ‘Revolt’, which I played to DEATH when it came out in January 1999.At that time I was going through a very nasty break-up, so I felt this song sure spoke volumes about that….. and so it feels weird to hear it again now….! Its clear now that both the albums were pretty poor;) but this still stands up..
Placebo - Every You Every Me
AAAAAGGH!!!!!!
InXS – To Look At You
A far cry from their embarrassing later ‘leather and drum machines’ days, this is a nice bit of slightly edgy early 80s pop, no more no less!
Air – All I Need
Laahvly track. A bit marred by it’s ‘chillout’ status, but that’s hardly Air’s fault. Great stuff.
Eg – Nothing Comes Easy
Another big one…….
Well, at least he proves he can sing, which is more than can be said for him in his Brother Beyond days……..that’s about it though;) Having said that, I was GUTTED that Virgin in Birmingham didn’t stock the album when I checked a month ago…really!
Madonna – Secret
Deffo one of her more low-key singles, and all the better for it……Only ‘Justify My Love’really does it for me as far as Miss Ciccone is concerned, but I’ll take this for now..
A Flock Of Seagulls – Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)
My mum’s favourite single of all time…
For years I’ve had to endure her nearly having a heart attack when she hears it on Radio Plymouth Sound or TOTP2 or something;) Due to that exposure, I think it’s a very sharp pop record, far better than much of the ‘synth pop’ w**k around at the time (Thompson Twins?
). And its impossible not to hum the melody line at random moments…
Kylie Minogue – Some Kind of Bliss
Well, its my favourite Kylie single, but I have a feeling you could have guessed that….
Its also NOT the worst single MSP have ever put their name to either (This wipes the floor with ALL the singles from ‘Everything Must Go’ and ‘This is my Truth Tell Me Yours’). It was Kyle’s and James attempt to “re-write Build Me Up Buttercup”, I think they pretty much succeeded!
ABBA – The Winner Takes It All
I can never listen to this without thinking that Every Third Sunday/The Swoop nearly covered it at one of our gigs! It was discarded in favour of ‘Blue (Da Ba Dee)’ by Eiffel65 instead tho……Just timeless pop this isn’t it, only a complete chump could deny that.
Will Young – From Now On
Oh please don’t make me…!
Better than Placebo mind;)
A-ha - Minor Earth, Major Sky
I get the feeling one of these days A-ha might be held in the same ..er..’reverence’ as Duran Duran seem to be…..laughed off as cheesy and stupid at the time, but due to the bands they influence now (Keane in this case;)), might be re-appraised. This is alright, but its no ‘Touchy’ is it?
Dido – Take My Hand
I said DON’T!
Rather this than The Verve tho;)
Anyway, apart from a couple of shockers, a very fine compilation…might even open a few avenues for me! Having said that, you’ll HAVE to hear mine now….
Right, what Parkinsons song shall I pick…?
