I'm just wondering cos I feel really old when I catch a bit of TOTP or any music show now cos I just don't get the music that churns out. Have the standards in music dropped or has the wide genere of music exploded since the days of 'Karma Chameleon', 'Take On Me' and 'Ebony and Ivory'. I mean I like music from all era's, some old like Nat King Cole, Doris Day to Randy Crawford, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, ***WHITNEY*** to people of t'day like Delta Goodrem, Ronan Keating and Will Young. Seems to me the days of timeless music have gone and the vast majority of the music that gets churned out now is a pile of pants with very few exceptions such as Katie Melua's very recent 'Close to Crazy' and Delta Goodrems MOST MARVELLOUS OF ALL ALBUMS IN RECENT TIMES.

I suppose a large part depends on what type of music you like. I mainly like MOR and soul. I just find that 'Eamon' one with 'Frankee' a bit sh*tty or perhaps I'm just an old fart at 30...

of course it varies from person to person, but on the whole i think musical taste often matures with age, and the apparent drop in standards is probably more due to younger and younger people buying more music. i used to love pop and dance when i was about 12, 13 - and at that point i noticed that i loved a lot of the stuff that was doing well in the charts. i've moved dramatically away from that direction now, and am often surprised to find a single song i like in the top 20, let alone the top 10. the reason a lot of chart music is as popular as it is is probably because not many people outside the pre-teen age group are daft enough to buy heaps of singles of course, that's a sweeping generalisation exceptions to every rule... but i wasn't one of them on a somewhat related note, i want a britrock revival.

I think Jade sums it up pretty well really. I do still like stuff in the charts, but probably not as much as I sued to when I was a teenager. I'd like to think my music tastes have stayed fairly similar for now. I was into the Gothy stuff and rock in my later teenage years, then got into the Smiths/Cure at uni, mellowed a bit when I met Mel, but always and still do follow the indie path with a bit of pop. dance or whatever thrown in. I love the new Faithless and 411 tunes. It's being open to everything that matters, give it all a go, at least you can be objective then.

I think when you're a teenager you are certainly swayed by peer pressure and what your friends are into. I know I was, but then secretly I liked guitar/indie stuff that wasn't cool amongst 10-13 yr olds, so maybe you just become more confident in expressing your musical taste to others.

For me, definitely - one thing I've noticed is that I do like listening to a lot more classical or ambient music - whereas before if it didn't have a vocal it would bore the pants off me. Mind you, I still love the odd cheesy tune like XTM/DJ Chucky and Special D!

Katie Melua's very recent 'Close to Crazy' and Delta Goodrems MOST MARVELLOUS OF ALL ALBUMS IN RECENT TIMES. Jesus christ! I wouldn't call those two mature. I f***ing hate the Melua b****. Delta is so-so. In answer to the question I reckon it does. Although i've always liked older singers anyway i've gone off the pure pop stuff a bit as i've gotten older. I used to buy sh*t loads of pop singles but i'm very descerning in my tastes now. I don't think 19 is old but it is more mature than 13, 15, 15. I think it also has a lot to do with the repetitive nature of the music biz. All these people going crazy about that group Pop! well, before they heard the song . Anyway, my point is we've had Steps (boooo!) and Scooch (yay!). It's just that you get bored of the same old and move on to something else. I prefer 80's singers myself. Give me Debbie Harry, Sheena Easton, and Pat Benatar over b*st*rd Beyonce, Michelle McManus, and Norah Jones.

Yes, from The Legend Of Billie Jean - one of my favourite 80's flicks!
I know Shadows Of The Night and Sex As A Weapon - I love them! Hearbreater and Hit Me With Your Best Shot are two of her best.
No heard My Clone Sleeps Alone? though. I Will try and track down!
