Was a bit disappointed that Mark Selby didn't close out after a legendary comeback but he was probably a bit tired. Still what an excellent player and one who I hope wins in the future - when he's on form he's out of this world. Well done to John Higgins too I guess!

but when next world championship The next world championship will be in April and May next year. It turned out to be a great final in the end. A great comeback from Selby but let's not forget Higgins outplayed him on the first day and over the course of the whole match probably just deserved to win. I'll have the final end-of-season world rankings up shortly.

Thanks misterhamster - never even heard of Graham Dott as haven't been following for a while until these championship. Good to see Mark Selby close to the top 10! Dott was last year's world champion! He was a shock winner last year but had really kicked on from that this season and after winning the China Open, was provisional #1 going to the Crucible. His first round exit ended his hopes of finishing the season as world #1.

Sure someone said The Crucible was being refurbished and "see you in 2009" The Crucible is going to be refurbished but it won't affect the World Snooker Championship. It will be back at the Crucible next year.

The various national governing bodies have started announcing their wild card choices to join the Main Tour for next season.
England's Jimmy Robertson has been chosen. England has one more nomination to come. Wales have selected Gareth Coppack. The Republic of Ireland have chosen Rodney Goggins, who spent a season on the Main Tour a few years ago. Northern Ireland will choose either Jordan Brown or former World Championship quarter-finalist Patrick Wallace. Scotland also has a wild card selection and World Snooker themselves have 2 choices (that's how Judd Trump got onto the tour a couple of years ago).
Matt Selt, James McBain and Alex Davies completed the list of those qualifying through this year's PIOS.

A new tournament has been announced for next season.
The Shanghai Masters will take place in August and will be the first event of the new season. It means there will be 2 tournaments in China next season.
The top 16 in the world will qualify automatically for the Shanghai Masters, along with 16 qualifiers and 8 Chinese wild cards.
The full calendar for next season is still to be announced so there might be an outside chance of further tournaments being added to the schedule.

World Snooker has announced one of its wild card choices for next season's Main Tour.
Alfie Burden will retain his place on the Main Tour. He is #74 in the world but was the highest ranked player on the one year list who hadn't already qualified for next season.
Ashley Wright has also been given a place on the Tour. He finished 9th in the PIOS rankings but has been given a place because Kurt Maflin has already qualified by winning the world amateur title.

The calendar for next season has been announced this morning.
The number of tournaments is the same as last season, with the Shanghai Masters replacing the Malta Cup.
Shanghai Masters (Shanghai) August 6-12
Pot Black Inivitational October 6
Grand Prix (Aberdeen) October 13-21
Northern Ireland Trophy (Belfast) November 4-11
UK Championship December 3-16
The Masters (Wembley) January 13-20
Welsh Open February 11-17
Beijing China Open (Beijing) March 23-30
World Championship (Sheffield) April 19-5 May
Whilst it's disappointing that the number of tournaments hasn't increased, I think the calendar looks better than before with fairly even gaps between the tournaments. From October onwards, there's a tournament every month until the end of the season. The only other negative is the Shanghai Masters being so early. Because of the long distance involved, qualifying has to take place well in advance so the players can make their arrangements. Qualifying for the Shanghai Masters will take place next month, before some of the planned events, which decide players for the Main Tour, have taken place. That means the winners of some of those events won't be able to take up their place on the Tour until the 2008-9 season.
2 more names have been announced for next season's Main Tour. Fraser Patrick is Scotland's nomination and Australia's Steve Mifsud has been awarded a place due to Oceania champion Dene O'Kane being ineligible after he competed on the Main Tour last season.

Ronnie O'Sullivan has been fined almost £21,000 and docked 900 ranking points for his walkout at last year's UK Championship. The 900 point deduction doesn't affect his official world ranking position (#5) but he'll drop from #2 to #3 in the provisional rankings at the start of next season.
World Snooker has announced Ben Woollaston as its second wild card choice for next season. The world #75 was the highest ranked player on the one year ranking list who hadn't already qualified. Patrick Wallace has been given the nod as Northern Ireland's wild card choice for next season. There are now just 6 places left to be filled for next season's Main Tour.
These are the ins and outs so far:
OUT Sean Storey, James Leadbetter, Paul Davison, Peter Lines, Issara Kachaiwong, Matthew Couch, Passakorn Suwannawat, Jamie Jones, Chris Norbury, Alex Borg, Chris Melling, Dermot McGlinchey, Shokat Ali, Lee Page, Dene O'Kane, Mohammed Shehab, Robert Stephen, Jeff Cundy, Patrick Einsle, Mark Boyle, Paul Wykes, Roy Stolk
