I don't mind that Lord Of The Rings is so popular, but it is a pity some other fantastic movies were overlooked because of it. Well not overlooked, they all got nominations, but they deserved to win something (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Master & Commander, Cold Mountain, Monster).

fair enough, but the other two lotr films came off with hardly anything in 01 and 02, which i thought was really disappointing. ROBBERY

An absolute disgrace IMO. I completely despise the LOTR franchise, and the appeal is just wasted on me. I honestly CAN'T see why people like it, it's just horrendous. Sure, not the worst bunch of films I've ever seen by any means, but still completely undeserving of all the popularity and acclaim. I normally tend to find myself agreeing with critics, but not in this case. Most overrated pile of b****cks EVER. Will you just *look* at those rankings on the iMDB? Ridiculous... GOOD thing about this year's Oscars: Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. Can't really comment on much else (LOTR would have won). Nice Blake Edwards routine, and the Best Documentary winner was cool. Oh, and touching tribute to Katie Hepburn too. Bob Hope and Gregory Peck too. Interesting that they spent more time on Bob and Kate than Greg tho...

It seems everyone has been brainwashed into thinking LOTR is the best thing ever. I knew I wouldn't like it before they even started filming. I like actor-driven films, or short of that plot & dialogue driven, not special effects driven. They posted on Outpost Gallifrey that the LOTR victory is a victory for all fantasy & sci fi, but I disagree, I don't think LOTR & Dr Who are ANYTHING alike, I love one & couldn't care less about the other. And if in 5 years time Dr Who was up there winning all the awards in some bastardised all style no substance version, I'd disown it.

i'm afraid i'm one of those people who really can't see what there is not to love about the lotr trilogy apart from deviations from the books themselves, which i can live with, because although it certainly wasn't faithful to the book in all respects, if it had been the films would have been a lot longer and probably not as good. they are absolutely FANTASTIC films imo. as i said, i can't really comment on whether any other films deserved to win some of the things rotk got, because i didn't see much last year. the plot was engaging, the special effects were awesome (i mean, come on, i don't think anyone can argue successfully with that), the score was moving... and the acting was by no means bad, although they didn't get any noms for that (probably deservedly). though andy serkis might have deserved a nom at least. the best film EVER? maybe not. the best film last year? probably. certainly the best i saw, and the best i've seen over the past few years. the other two films were very hard done by at the oscars; perhaps rotk's walking it this year makes up for that.

It's very difficult to say what my favourite movie of all time is but for about half an hour after watching the Return of the King I was on a complete high, it was almost too much to take in. I had never had such a reaction to a movie before and I am going to see it for the third time next week hopefully.
Yes there were deviations from the books which were such a vital part of my life - storytelling of the highest order that is also very spiritual. I think the films captured at least some of this essence and therefore deserves every oscars they could be nominated for.
Just to respond to K@ne, how can you not describe it as plot driven? There is so much detail packed into these movies and there is so much tension and pace built up. Admittedly it's not a character thing but I don't think LOTR ever pretended to be that.
