Good week for the old school - as well as Elvis, also new entries for Tears For Fears, The Wonder Stuff and the House Of Love, the latter of whom were last in the chart in 1990.
Charlotte Hatherley crashes in at #5, obviously a contender to be the next #1 - she used to be in Ash though I'm not sure exactly when she left the band and therefore whether she was still there when they had their only NM #1 in 2001 with "Shining Light". But she definitely would have appeared on the album 1977. She once joined the Clint Boon Experience on stage in 1999 at Brixton Academy when they were supporting Travis. (She may have appeared on other gigs as well but that was the one I went to).
Emiliana Torrini charted previously back in 2000. In between she co-wrote Kylie's UK #1 hit "Slow" (an NM top 20 hit).
I wasn't very much into Kate Bush's "Hounds Of Love" album and none of the singles from it reached the NM chart, not even "Running Up That Hill". The Futureheads now take the title track from that album into the NM chart. Kate did manage to get her second NM #1 in 1986 however, sharing the credit though with Peter Gabriel on "Don't Give Up".
For Elvis, (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame was a return to Rock 'N' Roll after the little diversion into operatic reinterpretations (It's Now Or Never and Surrender) and soft ballads (Are You Lonesome Tonight and Wooden Heart). The guitar riff is slightly reminiscent of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" and was later adopted by Johnny Marr for the Smiths "Rusholme Ruffians". In a live version (which appears on the album Rank) they medleyed "Rusholme Ruffians" into "His Latest Flame". "Little Sister" is a more bluesy rock 'n' roll song with a twangy guitar (the Shadows could have backed him on it) and perhaps also a bit reminiscent of "Shakin' All Over". It's not the first time an Elvis song sounded similar to Buddy Holly - "I Need Your Love Tonight" is very reminiscent of Buddy and in fact it replaced "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" at #1. We can only speculate what path Elvis's career might have taken had Buddy Holly not died so early on.

new entry comments
5 ( -- ) b*st*rdo - Charlotte Hatherley
She is still in Ash this is just a side project and its an alright song.
13 ( -- ) (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame / Little Sister - Elvis Presley
not interested in the slightest
44 ( -- ) Closest Thing To Heaven - Tears For Fears
pretty poor, it couldve been a b side to 'Sowing the seeds of love'
49 ( -- ) Black Horse & The Cherry Tree - KT Tunstall < DEBUT >
good this but it took a while to grow on me
54 ( -- ) Sunny Road - Emiliana Torrini
dull
57 ( -- ) Bile Chant / Escape From Rubbish Island - Wonder Stuff
bile is the word 62 ( -- ) Oh My G-d [RE] - Kaiser Chiefs (#11 in 2004)
just brilliant
65 ( -- ) Fake - Frames < DEBUT >
ok not very memorable
69 ( -- ) Apply Some Pressure - Maximo Park < DEBUT >
another slow burner just love this now
72 ( -- ) She's Got A Reason - Dogs
brilliant last 30 secs but prefer 'london bridge'
73 ( -- ) Hounds Of Love - Futureheads
just fantastic the best thing they have done so far
74 ( -- ) Loneliness - Ed Harcourt
and again the best from Ed but he still missed my top 75
75 ( -- ) Love You Too Much - House Of Love
some bands should quit while they were behind House of Love's 1st 2 albums were excellent but they are now a pointless shadow of a once great band.

You don't have much good to say for old bands making a comeback. I wouldn't really list the Wedding Present in that category, though that's probably how everyone else sees them, because as far as I'm concerned they've never really been away, just that in between they were called Cinerama.
I quite like the Tears For Fears one. The others (Wonder Stuff and House Of Love) will probably not go very far, though the Wonder Stuff had a better single "Better Get Ready For A Fist Fight" last year.
As for House Of Love, I only knew them for 2 singles, one of them "Shine On" which I think was the single that inspired the indie-collection of the 1990s to be called "Shine" and indeed that song appears on the first volume (I think). I know I have it on my computer having ripped it from one of the Shines.

But she definitely would have appeared on the album 1977. She didn't. She first appeared on the single 'A Life Less Ordinary' in 1997, then the 'Nu-Clear Sounds' album and as previously mentioned, she is still in the band.

Ok, thanks for the information about her. I'm sure there is a female singing backing vocals though on "Oh Yeah" - obviously not her.
