There are still 2 more charts until the Christmas one, but Decemberists are clear favourites to remain on top until then. Once again the top 2 were fairly close and the 3 behind it are pretty strong too so we actually have one of the strongest charts of the year so far if not the strongest.
The chart of the year will not be published until after the last chart, so I'm hoping I can get the charts published on the following dates:
17th December: on Thursday 22nd December
24th December: on Tuesday 27th December (Christmas chart)
31st December: on Sunday 1st January
and then on 1st January I will compile the chart of 2005 which will be broadcast on Radio Earl Purple.
The REP 1990 Special will probably take place a bit later.
The release schedule does get a bit smaller from this point on but it seems to pick up already by 9th January - it would seem that a few more have realised it's a good time for a new artist to break the chart and make a name for themselves. It has also been known for some January releases to get some pretty high sales in the past (Babylon Zoo for example).
The Decemberists are a US band who have released their 3rd album. I think they have only just attempted to break the UK and are signed to Rough Trade here (an indie label but one of the biggest ones, originally the label of the Smiths and now have bands like The Strokes). They remind me a little of the Ben Folds Five (a great US indie-rock band from the late 1990s). Sixteen Military Wives is an anti-war song.
Akira The Don had the #1 single of the year in 2004. Clones is based on (and samples) Clones (We're All) by Alice Cooper, so there's some US-rock influence in that song too although Akira The Don themselves are Welsh.
2 ( 1 ) Clones - Akira The Don (#1[1])
3 ( 3 ) If Only The Moon Were Up - Field Music
4 ( 9 ) Let There Be Love - Oasis
5 ( 14 ) Albion - Babyshambles
6 ( 8 ) Jenny Wren - Paul McCartney
7 ( 6 ) Jane Falls Down - Modern (#6)
8 ( 5 ) Modern Way - Kaiser Chiefs (#3)
9 ( 11 ) How Rude She Was - Towers Of London
10 ( 4 ) Ringway To Seatac - Wedding Present (#1[4])
11 ( 32 ) Speed - Oversol
12 ( 21 ) Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've) - Various Artists
13 ( 36 ) Bootprints - King Creosote
14 ( 16 ) One Way Ticket - Darkness
15 ( 24 ) Ghostfaced Killer - Dead 60s
16 ( 26 ) Dirty Harry - Gorillaz
17 ( 7 ) Desperate Cry For Help - Beauty Shop (#2[2])
