This is "not quite the Christmas chart", and it might appear that the Decemberists have it all wrapped up now, albeit a big climb from Mohair.
There is however an outside threat from a single not in the chart, and I'm not referring to Shayne Ward. The hint is that if it gets to #1 it will be the second single to be an NM Christmas #1 twice.
We have the artist currently at #3 in the chart to blame for releasing for Christmas week itself. Nobody ever used to do that, instead they would release early in December hoping for maximum sales, and of course back then singles used to climb to #1.
But in 1994, Oasis hoped that a late release of "Whatever" would disturb East 17 and Mariah Carey's bid for the top. It probably would now but back then they just weren't popular enough. However "Whatever" is among their biggest selling singles and went on to stay more week in the UK top 75 than any other single in the 1990s until it became ineligible as a 4-song EP. Other songs on that track included "Half A World Away" which was used as the theme for the Royle Family, showing that even their B-sides had quality.
So it having been done once, another Oasis song had a go the following year, only it was not actually Oasis but Mike Flowers Pops who challenged Michael Jackson for the top spot with their cover of Wonderwall. Once again it failed, but the precedent had been set and the next 3 years, Spice Girls singles were released for Christmas week and all of them made it to #1.
