17 new entries, one Jenny Lewis song replacing another in the chart in the process. This time last year, her band Rilo Kiley were just losing their place at the top.
As Idle Hands reach #1 it's back to having a "new" act at the top again. And when I mean new I mean first hit. This was part of a 4-song EP so was not eligible for the UK chart. It was priced only at £1.99 too.
I should clarify that the eligibility rules for the NM chart are not the same as for the UK chart - sometimes they are less strict and sometimes stricter. For example, there has to be a CDS available. The Michael Jackson ones are not eligible because they will not play on a PC so do not qualify as regular CDs. That not only excludes downloads in the week before their physical release but also 7" only singles like Shack. The CD may contain 4 songs but not 5 thus the Arctic Monkeys were not eligible.
Ghostly Man were incorrectly placed 3 weeks ago and were climbing nicely before it was stripped from them due to ineligibility. This week they fly straight back in and could challenge the top. Other big entries this week are by established acts - Adam Green has had 3 NM #2 solo hits but did also have a #1 with the Moldy Peaches. Red Hot Chili Peppers have never actually had an NM #1 - their biggest hit "Under The Bridge" fell one place short. Goldfrapp's relatively high entry is perhaps a bit of a surprise - they haven't done that well on the NM chart recently in spite of having had a top 5 hit with Utopia in 2001 when they weren't even considered "big" yet.
Now, looking at the movers, Ain't Got No - I Got Life was Nina Simone's biggest UK hit peaking at #2 in 1968. Last week she actually removed herself from the NM one-hit wonders list - her only previous NM hit reached #1 in 1987, that being "My Baby Just Cares For Me". It stayed one week on top and was replaced by Fairytale Of New York. Other great songs of hers have included "I Put A Spell On You" and "Feeling Good".
Wolfmother's "Dimension" is also a re-issue - it reached NM #25 last year. Heavy rock, it sounds like a classic rock song Deep Purple never got round to writing. Wolfmother are Australian and they were playing Virgin the same day that the Dirty Pretty Things were playing HMV. Well great to know rock is really back, not that it ever went away, of course.
