Chart Commentary
In an unprecedented feat, at the end of the week two acts are level on plays to claim the first ever joint number one. Both level on 73 plays at the end of the week, Infernal and LL Cool J both claim number one. By canon standards, Infernal should claim number one by climbing higher than LL Cool J (as controversially decided in 1990 in the official singles chart when Deee-Lite were denied a much deserved number one) but, liking both so much, I decided to break a rule or two in giving them a joint number one. This gives Infernal their first number one and LL his second on the Tyron1 Top 40.
However, in compensation for the drawing shenanagins at number one, there is no official runner-up spot, but this can be claimed by Shakira, who stays steadfast at number three for the third week running.
Missing out on gaining a new record with 66 plays, just 8 plays off number one, the Pet Shop Boys claim a new entry at number 4 with the fabulous I'm With Stupid. Just 7 more plays could have made the number one even more bizarre, although I feel that in the occurence of a three way tie, the Pet Shop Boys would have probably won out in the end due to their new entry status. However, watch this space - top ten entries in this chart virtually always end up at number one - the only exceptions to date are T-Pain, who drops to number 7 this week, but still stands a chance of claiming the number one spot, and Daz Sampson, who will almost certainly improve on his number 5 peak come the week of the Eurovision Song Contest. Over the past 4 years, all British entries have made number one for at least one week (yes, that includes Jemini and James Fox, sue me) and Daz looks likely to at least make the top 3, given the uniquity of this years entry.
At number 5, Rihanna rises one place with the superb Unfaithful, a sweet ballad about cheating on your lover (Oxymoron in there? You bet'cha!) written by, lo and behold, Ne*Yo, who seems to have some sort of Cathy Dennis-esque Midas touch when it comes to songwriting. I await the barrage of angered pm's in response to this clearly sacrilege statement (in songwriting terms anyway), but, who cares? I'm a controversial person. Just below at number 6 is Orson, who failed to match the two week peak of No Tomorrow with Bright Idea, which withered this week, falling from 82 plays to 46, and nearly matching the drop of Busta Rhymes last week. Don't say this isn't a fast moving chart.
At number 10, Christina Milian makes Say I her fifth top 10 hit of her career, joining When You Look At Me, AM To PM, Dip It Low and Whatever You Want, two of which were number one hits, three of which were top 5. With Say I catchy enough to be a number one in its own right, expect this one in the upper upper echelons of the chart soon.
In the 11-20 area of the chart comes three new entries and three 20-40 climbers.
At number 14, Nelly Furtado makes a storming entry with her stomper, Maneater. Previous top 10 hits include Like A Bird and Turn Off The Light. She also had a minor top 40 hit with Forca in 2004.
At number 16 comes Poppin' My Collar, the follow-up to Stay Fly by Three 6 Mafia, which made number 2 in October 2005.
At 17 comes a climb from T.I. with What You Know About That. T.I. is currently at number one with his album King in my unpublished album charts. Expect his U.K. release, Why You Wanna to chart soon - it is currently bubbling under at number 43.
At 18 comes the fantastic Where'd You Go by Fort Minor feat. Holly Brook. Seeing as this song has already gained 14 plays since the cut-off point for this week's charts, you can expect it to be a sure-fire top 5 hit next week.
At 19 comes a climb by the "Chili's" with Dani California. Can it beat the number 6 peaks of Californication and By The Way? Only time will tell.
Finally, at number 20 comes the follow-up to Crazy by Gnarls Barkley, Smiley Faces. Expect Go Go Gadget Gospel, my favourite track off the St. Elsewhere album, to join it soon.
