Now who among you may have guessed that I would have a chart with loads of World Cup songs in it, but actually only one, Mas Que Nada is a remake and all the others are original songs. At least I think they are.
Up until this week I resisted charting any that were remakes but the temptation to give Sergio Mendes his first NM hit for 23 years was too much. He hasn't broken the record though, Jackson Browne holds that with close to 25 years absence.
Sergio Mendes is one of two near one-hit wonders (one hit 2-ders?) to make a comeback this week. His only previous hit in 1983 was the ballad "Never Gonna Let You Go" featuring vocals by Joe Pizzulo and Leza Miller and reached NM #2, as romantic ballads often did back then (I wonder how Westlife would have got on?) - it was kept out by the uptempo "It's Over" by the Funk Masters.
The other act to make a comeback having had one single peak at #2 previously are Dreadzone - Little Britain reached #2 early in 1996 - that was kept out by Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" the last week that single was #1.
If "Valerie" gets to #1 it will be the first single by the Zutons but the second called Valerie to top the chart. Steve Winwood took his Valerie to #1 in 1987. (and f**k off Eric Prydz). Other song titles to have been #1 in different songs are "The Power Of Love" (3 versions, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Huey Lewis & The News and Jennifer Rush) and "Woman" (John Lennon, Neneh Cherry). Now there have been a lot of songs called Crazy but Gnarls Barkley didn't get to NM #1 - anyone remember who did? (There has been just one NM #1 entitled Crazy).
