Summary:
In one of the most volatile charts I can remember compiling, there's a symmetry at the very top as 2008 kicks into life with a bang!
Basshunter hit the top with a massive 8-1 hoist to the summit to become the first new #1 of the year. It's the largest ever climb to #1 in my chart in any incarnation (beating the record of 6-1 set by Editors and 'All Sparks' in Apr 2006). While this is impressive... it is comprehensively outclassed by its 14-1 leap in the Official UK Chart this week.
Previous long-time incumbants Girls Aloud take a fairly hefty 1-5 dip this week after five weeks at the summit, even dipping below Bloc Party who drop a more respectable 2-4. Both were leapfrogged this week however by a couple of tracks which hit new peaks this week.
Scouting For Girls leapt to a new peak of #3 last week, and do so again by shifting upwards to #2 after five weeks on the chart. After entering at #26 last month they've had an impressive climb to the upper reaches, moving 26-16-9-3-2 so far, but the big prize had eluded them... so far. Amy MacDonald is another artist with upwards intentions as it moves to #3 this week, after an even more impressive six weeks on. She entered slightly higher at #24, and has had a slightly more modest, but equally impressive climb to her peak - moving 24-14-10-7-4-3 thus far. Don't bet against the amiable Scot just yet either, she's still growing on me (like the rest of the country it seems) and was extremely close to passing Scouting For Girls this week.
Three songs make semi-expected big leaps into the top ten this week too. Good Charlotte lead the pack moving 12-6 with 'Dance Floor Anthem', a track seemingly not to be released in the UK but is making good strides over in the US. My recent purchase of Guitar Hero III continues to make it's impression on my chart at the moment too, with DragonForce flying high as they move 18-7 with the non-single release 'Through The Fire & Flames'. The third track of the big climbers are the lovable Foals gang. 'Balloons' entered at #50 four weeks ago , after i'd heard it just twice!... but since then has gone from strength to strength and reaches a new high of #10 this week, and could climb higher still. They're one of my favourite 'new' bands of 2008 so far (I discovered them very late ), their next single 'Cassius' is apparently even better!
Rounding out the top ten, The White Stripes hit a new peak of #8 with 'Conquest', whilst Timbaland shows no signs of stopping, despite dipping 6-9 with the OneRepublic penned 'Apologize'.
Now, onto the madness. Outside the top ten there are ELEVEN new entries and TEN climbers this week, with one non-mover. Rihanna leads the new entry brigade with the still to be released 'Don't Stop The Music'. I had to enter this track early as I was very worried it would peak early for me, a nice adaptation of the rules. The track is my favourite from her album 'Good Girl Gone Bad', and is immensely catchy with its Michael Jackson samples and thumping beat. American hip-hop puts in its best show for ages this week aswell, with two ace tracks from two of the most exciting artists in the genre, Lupe Fiasco and, of course, the amazingly talented musicican and immensely irritating man that is Kanye West. Both tracks oddly benefit from input from artists outside their comfort zone, with Matthew Santos (a Folk-rock musician by trade!) adding his vocals on 'Superstar' and Coldplay's world-famous frontman Chris Martin helping Kanye out on 'Homecoming'. Expect both to climb high in coming weeks.
Robyn is also back this week with a great track. After the bad miss of 'Handle Me' this is a great return to form. I've not actually gotten round to getting her eponymous album, obviously i've heard good things about it, but the fact her singles record is a little patchy puts me off. 'Be Mine' is great and 'With Every Heartbeat' is amazing, but 'Handle Me' was a miss and the less said about 'Konichiwa Bitches' the better...
Also this week it's a welcome return to Radiohead. 'Jigsaw Falling Into Place' in the first single taken from their essentially "free" album 'In Rainbows'.
Other new entries this week are from Killswitch Engage (GH3 factor again!), The Wombats, the relatively unknown Parka, The Kills, Supergrass and surprising even for me, Matt Costa. There are also a plethora of songs (NINE!), which all have entered in my 'Bubbling Under' chart, and could chart in the coming weeks also! 2007 is officially dead.
But anyway, onto 2008, and can anything possibly dislodge Basshunter?
Next Week:
Adele - Chasing Pavements
Alter Bridge - Ties That Bind
Bullet For My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire
Circuits - City Of Lights / Before It's Over
Client - Lights Go Out
Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor
Jennifer Lopez - Hold It Don't Drop It
Sons & Daughters - Darling
Stephen Fretwell - Now
Will.I.Am - One More Chance
Hot Chip are the standout from this list, and could even enter straight at #1 next week, while elsewhere it's pretty lean. Adele and Sons & Daughters should at least make the top fifty though. See you later guys and gals!
