For the first time in the 19 years that I've been a fan of Ms Jackson, I've found myself totally non-plussed by her forthcoming comeback. With the release of each new album, I've always been beside myself with anticipation in the run up to its release. 'All For You' spectacularly failed to live up to my expectations. I tried to like it, I really did, but it has rarely graced my CD player with its presence since.
Janet's about to release her 6th studio album since her '86 breakthrough, and I find myself for the first time not really giving a frig. This time round my expectations are low and so you would think it would be easier to meet them. I downloaded the first track to be premiered from 'Damita Jo', 'Just A Little While' and it did absolutely nothing for me. It left me completely cold. I played it and played it and waited for it to "click". Nothing. It is the worst thing she's done and an awful choice for a lead-off single.
Then came the Superbowl fiasco and that "wardrobe malfunction". I reached the conclusion that the new album was a pile of sh*te and she was clawing for publicity because the record company weren't going to put their full weight behind it, and she'd soon be released from her Virgin contract a la Ms Carey. I've seen the links to download 'I Want You' and I just couldn't be arsed. Until this morning, when in a fit of boredom I thought I might as well give it a listen.
What I heard left me speechless. It's an understated piece of gorgeousness and sounds like something that could have been on the "janet." album (a really good thing!). There's a very hypnotic quality about the track and it's been on constant repeat all morning. If there were any justice, it'd be the lead-off single and would be a strong contender for her first ever UK No.1. It's already firmly ensconced in my all-time top 10 Janet tracks.
Now when is that album out again?
