Note NewOrder up from #37 to #20 in the 27th week!!! That's the sort of thing that used to make listening to the charts on a Sunday exciting and worthwhile. Much better than now with the songs entering at their highest position and then fall down forever more!

the #1 was a million seller, it passed its millionth sale three weeks after this chart... The #98 song (Reilly) was the theme tune to a TV programme called Reilly Ace Of Spies, the song spent half a year in the top 100 without getting any higher than about #25... The programme that replaced "Reilly" on ITV the following week was never heard of again - a certain "Auf Weidershen Pet"! Apparently it was full of Geordies working on a building site in Germany

Much better than now with the songs entering at their highest position and then fall down forever more! The week previous to this, "Blue Monday" had climbed from #44 to #37. It was the second time this year (1983) the record had been in the top 40. By the end of the year it had spent most of the year in the top 100. It then spent a further FOUR years inside the top 200!

Back then they wouldn't have removed it due to the silly chart rules. The 76-100 part of the chart is really interesting as most of these songs are not in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles.

Back then they wouldn't have removed it due to the silly chart rules. The 76-100 part of the chart is really interesting as most of these songs are not in the Guinness Book of Hit Singles. Until last September the #76-#100 used to be fairly good, it was records that either had increased in sales or were songs that were slowly falling down the chart. Now many songs miss out on the top 75 and also #76-#100 because their sales have increased! Silly chart rules. Since the chart rules came in last September, the average #100 has sold less than 300 copies because of the new rules... before last September the average sales of the #100 were twice that.

Poor Sheena Easton, 'Telefone' is one of her best songs and a US top 10 hit.

The #93, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, is a great song. The theme tune to the film of the same name, it was also covered by David Sylvian from the group Japan under the title "Forbidden Colours".

#93 was also the basis for Watergate's Heart Of Asia, which reached #3 in 2000.
