Koo Koo is a funk/rock album that she recorded with Chic and Blondie guitarist/boyfriend Chris Stein while still a member of the group. it was released in 1981, and tanked immediately; some say it was due to the fact that the material couldn't live up to the massive hype surrounding it; others attribute its failure to its bizzare album artwork and videos made by 'Alien' makeup artist H.R. Geiger that depicted Debs getting pins pushed through her face. The lead single, Backfired, peaked at #32 in England and missed the top 40 in the US. The second single, The Jam Was Moving, did not chart. Another single, Chrome, was promoed in various territories and also failed to make an impact. It's an unusual album, sonically spare and somewhat "unfinished" sounding in a few places. It was a pretty bold move on her part in my opinion. Nile Rogers of Chic later commented that Deb and Chris were "visionaries who were not afraid to push the envelope", a big compliment from a man who whined about just about all of their other collaborators (Diana Ross, for instance) for being so difficult. Here's an '81 interview that gives a sample of the album's sound and feel, and her ambitions to branch out on her own. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtRuVBfi7Tk&search=harry%20koo%20kooI'll be uploading this album and 3 12" mixes (The Jam Was Moving, Backfired and my favorite song of the set, Inner City Spillover) for anyone who is curious to hear it.
