I Could Be Happy - Altered Images (I got my first record player for Christmas in 1981. Well, more accurately, just after it in the sales, it was worth the wait as I had no records anyway. Woo!)

The Fireballs' "Bottle of Wine" in 1968.
However, I got the Beatles' "She Loves You" for my seventh birthday in 1964, which was the first 45 I got for myself, but didn't pay for it.

First 7" I bought was Jealous Mind by Alvin Stardust! A few days I earlier I was bought Tiger Feet by Mud and Devil Gate Drive by Suzi Quatro. They were the second, third and fourth singles I ever owned. The first was Sunderland All The Way, which was their 1973 Cup Final song and a relative bought it for me, in a vain and hopeless attempt to turn me into a Sunderland supporter! Not a chance and the song was awful.

With my 7 inch purchase of The Police Message In A Bottle, I got a free copy of the top 40 singles chart for that week, that's how I got into the charts

The last vinyl single I bought was Vogue by Madonna. That was the 12" version (I still have it). Last 7" I bought was bought the day before I bought Vogue - that was Jane Child's Don't Wanna Fall In Love, 50p from a chart return shop. It took another month to chart so the hyping must have been stepped up even further in the meantime.

They must have started doing the full top 40 sometime after July 1979 as I stopped picking up the leaflet around then (I used to buy Record Mirror every week so I had the full top 75 charts anyway).

First 7" I bought was Jealous Mind by Alvin Stardust! Tune. I still quite like it, though I haven't heard it in a long time. I think I may have also bought Red Dress (the follow up) too. Yet I can't remember ever being an Alvin Stardust fan and I tended to only buy songs by acts that I really liked in my early singles buying days. He was a bit scary to be honest, dressed in black with that pointy finger thing he used to do!

There was a story told by the DLTs of this world that there had been a huge build-up for this new star Alvin Stardust. There was a whole aura of mystery around him with the song released and building momentum and they were all eager to see his first performance at a Radio 1 roadshow. He came dashing out of a helicopter, surrounded by minders so no-one could interview him beforehand, and when he appeared on stage the reaction from the DJs was "f**k me, it's Shane Fenton." "Jealous Mind" was a "My Coo-Ca-Choo" soundalike, but despite being less famous these days it was more successful chartwise. I assume MCCC sold more though?

My Coo-Ca-Choo is his biggest seller with sales of about 775,000. It peaked at #2 but spent 8 weeks in the top 5 over the biggest sales period of the year. 5 of those weeks were consecutive weeks at #5.
