I just bought this DVD from www.hmv.co.uk and I have to tell you, it is PURE genius. This FABULOUS reissue of 'Sizzling La Toya Jackson' has been digitally transferred from a VHS copy to give you that amazing 'old-school' feeling.
I knew I was in for a surprise when I saw Toy bounce onstage and attempt some dance moves for 'You're Gonna Get Rocked'. She gets a couple wrong, but in TRUE La Toya style picks up her game and completes the taxing choreography for the rest of the song. 'You Keep My Restless Heart' sees a little bit of a fluff up lyrics-wise in the middle, but AGAIN La Toya recovers like a pro. 'Somewhere' is mimed to DELICIOUS finesse whilst 'Bad Girl' proves what a pro Toy is in the dance genre, shaking her ass with a live vocal and completing the affair by squealing 'yes! yes! 'Bad Girl'!' when the song is over.
Now comes my FAVOURITE part of the show... 'MAGIC LA TOYA!' Our darling goddess Toy Toy starts screeching 'no! no! no no no!' as all her limp-wristed spandex-wearing dancers surround her like the butch manly thugs they are and shove her into a giant cage. A mere THIRTY SECONDS later they remove the curtain from the cage and in her place is a GIANT tiger! It's PHENOMENAL. Who knew La Toya had such MYSTICAL powers as WELL as musical talent?
Her performance of 'Be My Lover' brought tears to my eyes, but it's the closing trio of 'Do The Salsa', Gloria Estefan's 'Conga' and Prince's '1999' which truly separates La Toya from her contemporaries. Sure she forgets her cue in 'Conga', but a giggle and a swoosh of her volumous hair and all is forgiven. She continually fists the audience (it's La Toya's most fabulous dance move, you must see it to believe it) and they love every moment of it. At the end everyone involved in the show comes onstage and La Toya is DRAPED in an enormous white coat which makes her look like the DIVA she IS.
ADD to THAT, you ALSO get the original 'You're Gonna Get Rocked' film clip! It's TRULY a masterpiece, with TOY TOY herself decked out like a bikey b**** acting far more 'Bad' than Michael ever could. The make-up artist has raised Toy's right eyebrow so she also has a bit of that 'Nasty' look about her a la Janet... but carried off with more style, of course. (This goes without saying, I think you will agree). The lingering shots of her decked in leather, pushing up against a brick wall - let's just say, my dreams tonight will be action-packed I'm sure!
This DVD leaves NO doubt in my mind who the TRUE Jackson star is. 12 thumbs up from THIS happy reviewer!
