So it all kicks off tonight at home to Sheffield United. Most people seem to be tipping Boro to at least finish in the top 6. Some bookies have us as favourites... I think we should finish in the top 6 but it's hard to have any confidence in Southgate, given he's taken us from the UEFA Cup final to the Championship in 3 years. He has options regarding his team selection tonight. Brad Jones is injured so at least that's one less decision for Southgate to get wrong. Danny Coyne will play. Tuncay is still at the club but has tonsilitis and won't play. Lita is short of fitness and will probably be on the bench at best. Aliadiere is also ill apprently, so the likely front pairing (assuming Southgate doesn't opt to go for a 4-5-1 at home in the first game of the season ) is probably Emnes and Franks, unless Alves gets a game before he disappears to the Middle East, or one of the wingers gets pushed into a forward role. Rhys Williams has been in great form in pre-season so he might find a place somewhere in the starting line-up, hopefully in place of the painful Julio Arca. My starting XI would be: Coyne Hoyte Taylor Wheater Huth Yeates O'Neil Williams A Johnson Emnes Franks

Meant to say in the last thread that your comments about the Boro strikers could have been used to describe our strikers as well in the 2nd half of the last 2 seasons...
Will prob watch some of the game tonight. Championship matches on a Fri night still seems odd to me, especially at the start of the season, it seems to happen so rarely, but with the BBC having games on a Sat night i guess it could happen more this season. Anyway, not expecting a classic by any means but it'll be a tough battle between two sides who should be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

0-0.
About what I expected. Next weekend against Swansea will possibly be a clearer indication of where we are...

Boro are top of the league!
Sadly, this time tomorrow Newcastle may be bottom... I hope we don't play with our Custard Cream top...

I suspect you will be wearing the mustard/custard combo tomorrow, though I have noticed (due to the underwhelming demand for the away kit) you now have a 3rd kit which is a rip-off of Boro's classic blue and black away kit (or Inter Milan). We don't even have an away kit yet!

I think Boro will do well this season, you have a few good players.

I suspect we're still a striker short but hopefully that will be sorted this month once we've conned someone into buying sold Alves.

Re: blue and black kits, or gillingham... Think they had it before inter milan too. A mate told me about newcastles away kit, havent seen it yet but it did sound bad! On the match last night..saw about two-thirds of it. Was prob better than expected and surprisingly open. 0-0 wasnt a surprise though, should have put money on it! Just confirmed what i thought though. Youll miss downings creativity and like us your strikers will determine where u finish, we could have pretty similar seasons... Unlike u tho im not confident we will sign a striker before the window shuts...

It's a bit different to what we've had in recent years. We usually have blue & black stripes or just white.
It might look better on the telly (or when the players actually have some shirts an shorts that fit properly...)
Still, it's not the worst away kit in the Championship this season...

First win of the season and an impressive one. 3-0 at Swansea. Boro lost their last 12 away matches in the league last season, whilst Swansea only lost 3 times at home in the league last season.
Team: Coyne McMahon Grounds Huth (c) Wheater Yeates O'Neil Williams A Johnson Emnes Lita
Subs: Steele Hoyte Taylor Hines Arca Tuncay Franks
Goals: Johnson 32, Emnes 52, Tuncay 82

However, there are rumours that Tuncay will be going out on loan, rather than sold. If that's the case, Southgate might be forced to sell someone else and Huth could be a candidate. If the Huth/Wheater partnership stays together, we should be right up there, though I am a bit scared about Brad Jones returning from injury in a couple of weeks...

might have to find outwhere he lives and pay him a visit loaning tuncay could be a good move because even a loan fee could be a few million and if/when you go back up he will be your best forward player, saves a hell of a lot of hassle finding several players to strengthen the team when you have him already to come back into the team
