What were your favourite albums from 1984 ?
One of the best years ever for me.
1. Bruce Springsteen -- Born In The U.S.A. 2. Bronski Beat -- The Age Of Consent 3. Sade -- Diamond Life 4. Cyndi Lauper -- She's So Unusual 5. Bluebells -- Sisters 6. Tina Turner -- Private Dancer 7. Frankie Goes To Hollywood -- Welcome To The Pleasure Dome 8. Psychedelic Furs -- Mirror Moves 9. Talk Talk -- It's My Life 10. Queen -- The Works
And no space in the Top 10 for good LPs from Prince, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Madonna, Human League, and others...

I didn't buy albums in 1984 but if I did these would be my choices
The Smiths - The Smiths U2 -The Unforgettable Fire Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward The Blue Nile, A Walk Across the Rooftops Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Rattlesnakes Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense Bryan Adams - Reckless Madonna - Like A Virgin
I would agree with Bruce Springsteen,Cyndia Lauper and Talk Talk as well although I think Cyndi Lauper came out in 1983 yeh?

I bought many of those, some at the time and some later.
Thompson Twins - Into The Gap was an album I bought at the time and isn't on either of your lists. I liked their singles but didn't find the album that fascinating.
The Unforgettable Fire I bought around that time but I think I bought it in 1985.

Thompson twins kept the smiths off the top of the album chart on 1984

I nearly included Thompson Twins as I listened to it a bit at the time , at the time I probably played 'reckless' more than anything though

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Rattlesnakes 7. Thompson Twins - Into The Gap 8. The Smiths - The Smiths 9. Wham! - Make It Big 10. Thomas Dolby - The Flat Earth 11. U2 - The Unforgettable Fire 12. The Style Council - Cafe Bleu 13. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA 14. Queen - The Works 15. Madonna - Like A Virgin

I know the Thompson Twins kept out the Smiths but that's no reason to hate them. The Smiths made a habit of peaking at #2 with their albums.
I know that Genesis - Invisible Touch kept The Queen Is Dead out. I don't remember what kept the others out.
At the time I considered 1985 one of the best years for albums even though it was not as good as the two previous years for singles. Of course Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" was 1984, and Dancing In The Dark was even first a hit that year, but I always associate that album with 1985.
Hatful of Hollow was also 1984 and I prefer that to "The Smiths".

two stood out for me
1. The Smiths - The Smiths 2. R.E.M. - Reckoning ........................... 3. Van Halen - 1984 4. Bryan Adams - Reckless 5. Queen - The Works 6. Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II 7. Prince & The Revolution - Purple Rain 8. Madonna - Like A Virgin
after that I am struggling so a top 8 will have to do

two years before i was born, so i think i can be forgiven for only owning two: 'the smiths' and 'she's so unusual'. both very good albums.

Cyndi Lauper didn't get her first single onto the UK charts until January 1984. I'd have been surprised if the album was released in the UK before that - it certainly didn't chart. So, on the basis that American release dates were irrelevant to me in the early 1980s (and, frankly, still are), I'm stubbornly going to insist that "She's So Unusual" is a 1984 album.

I went by my 5 CD Box set Cyndi Lauper – Original Album Classics which has She's So Unusual as a 1983 release .... so on my excel database I categorized it accordingly. However, it first charted in the UK the week ending 18/02/1984 and debuted at #51 in the Top 100, which suggests it did not climb from outside the Top 100 to chart. Incidentally the album at #100 that week was: (Yes, it's that Arlene Phillips, choreographer of West End musicals, numerous 1980s pop videos and original judge on Strictly Come Dancing fame!)

No one putting Frankie goes to Hollywood on there lists that was probably the most anticipated album of 1984 It certainly was, but then it was released and the sinking realization hit the nation of music lovers that the 4 best tracks by far were the first 3 singles + the title track.
