ABC accumulates a 4th week at #1. The new emerging favourites to replace them might now be Dexy's Midnight Runners who enter at #7 having had a #1 just recently. This song is a cover version of Van Morrison but whilst I knew it was a cover and had heard of Van Morrison at the time I didn't know the original.
Musical Youth's entry is also a cover version of a "roots" reggae song but has been renamed as it was originally "Pass The Koutchie" or similar, where a "Koutchie" is a pipe that is passed to smoke (and of course contains cannabis). However some interest has been generated and some late shows did play the original of this song.
Interesting high entry for the Pinkees who are an unknown act and have only just entered the top 40. Kids From Fame meanwhile do what was quite rare at the time and get their next hit whilst the old one is still in the chart, thus having 2 singles in the chart. In Starmaker they seem to pass the mike around and at this point we haven't had all those charity hits, and it's actually therefore the hit with the largest number of lead vocalists on it (a "lead" vocalist meaning they sing alone at least one line of the song). Musical Youth notably has 2 vocalist, the main one and a young kid who does some ragga stuff.
The final entry (that I haven't mentioned) is by Mari Wilson, not to be confused with Meri Wilson who charted a few years earlier. Not that you'd be likely to confuse her, this woman is from London and has a very distinctive hairstyle. It took me a long time to chart this. Whilst I liked the song I felt it morally unfair that she favoured the bad guy who did nothing for her over the good guy, and may have withheld charting it for a while in protest.

You were to young to know many girls preferred bad boys then, I didn't learn that lesson till I was 17 and it is unfair, nice guys finish last in teenage years.

I was 17. Just starting my A-level year. But I was single and wanted a girlfriend. And someone I had hoped might be that girlfriend broke my heart. The ABC song then came out at a very convenient time and swept me away.

Your week beginning dates are wrong. Remember the Top 40 came out on a Tuesday so it should be 21 Sept and 28 Sept (and of course there were no Sunday sales anyway). . Musical Youth went to number 1 on Tues 29 September, when that chart was announced.

I'll be charting Air Supply's "Young Love" in a few weeks. After 7 consecutive top 5 hits in the USA it peaked only at #38. Track #3 on the album "Now And Forever", on which Even The Nights Are Better was track #2.
Whilst on the subject of my romantic experiences and lack of luck in it back around this time I actually caluclated that during that week I reached the point where I was halfway through my life to meeting Carol. Someone go back and tell me I'll meet that someone eventually but I'll have to wait all the same number of years again. Ok, maybe Phil Collins will tell me at the end of the year...
