I have read the book (the Kindle edition is much cheaper) and it is a brilliant insight on what goes on at the X-Factor. From what I've seen of the current series nothings changed so it's just as relevant. For example Steve wanted to be dropped from the recording deal not the other way around. He wanted to do that because they had pushed G4 album to the forefront bring it out before his own, as well as other reasons. He arranged a meeting with the boss of Sony and Simon to discuss pulling out. But Simon couldn't be bothered to attend. It was a million pound deal so Steve was expecting 50 to 100K to be offered. So they offered him 10K! Later they offered him 20K, ten straight away and ten after he had done a stint on series two of the show. When he refused Max Clifford and the guy who was convicted of phone tapping (both employed by Cowell) start running stories in the media about him working in pubs. Steve was actually and still is a talented singer songwriter. Before the show started he had been offered a guest spot on Lionel Ritchie's UK gig at Wembley. He thought the X-Factor would help him more. It didn't.
