That jazz-blues standard gives Etta James her second number one on my Retro Rewind chart .... five new entries come from the reissue of a flop 1959 USA single on the way to #3; the (yes really) B-side of "At Last" (a cover of Willie Dixon's 1954 song) which became a UK Top 10 hit in the 1990s thanks to a Diet Coke TV commercial; a lovely USA #22 folk ballad by an Californian singer/songwriter who heavily influenced Joni Mitchell; an instrumental USA #30 & UK #8 cover of the cowboy-styled country/western song written in 1948 by American songwriter Stan Jones; and the bossa nova composition which was the other side of Ben E King's debut single which was the A-side in the UK (the fools).

A static top four and five new entries from one side of the harmonious brothers (in vocals not real life) UK #1 hit which this uptempo side made USA #7, one place higher than the "splatter platter" ballad "Ebony Eyes"; Apparently written by their manager Peter Gormley (who also managed Cliff Richard, Frank Ifield and later Olivia Newton-John) this distinctive instrumental made UK #6; a Stax records re-recording of her self-penned 1957 Vee-Jay label track which failed to chart until it was covered by the Innocents became a breakthrough USA #10 hit for the R&B/soul singer; the 1950s R&B pop singer had his final USA top 40 hit (#12) with this uptempo track; and a USA #14 & UK #2 reworking of the 1930 Hoagy Carmichael and Sidney Arodin jazz pop standard for the Atlantic singer/actor.

2 of your new entries had top 40 hit covers in 1981, Let's Jump The Broomstick for Coast To Coast and Buona Sera for Bad Manners. (And incidentally you didn't appear to listen to it in full as it isn't an instrumental).

Vaughn Monroe's take on "Ghost Riders In The Sky" was no. 1 for a mighty 11 weeks in the US charts in 1949. Strangely it only peaked at 2 in the country charts...

Rattling along nicely...
Mary Wells' "Bye Bye Baby" was a tremendous cut, very rough, garagey and raw. Far more so than her later polished sound. There's even an element of blues shouter in there; not what one would expect from the very clean-cut Tamla sound. It's probably the only "modern" sound in this part...
Helen Shapiro makes an interesting comparison; she does not sound like a 14 year old on her debut hit, a far more mature voice, with a touch of the Winehouse about it. But the song and production is looking backwards rather than forwards.
