The Beatles remain on top in a week with two Beatles related new entries out of the eight:- The radical re-arrangement of the original by the Sheffield born blue eyed blues-soul singer with producer Denny Cordell, in a slower, 6/8 meter, using different chords in the middle eight, and a lengthy instrumental introduction (featuring drums by Procol Harum's B.J. Wilson, guitar lines from top session man and imminently Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page, organ by Tommy Eyre, and female gospel vocals by Madeline Bell (future Blue Mink), Rosetta Hightower (The Orlons), & Patrice Holloway (sister of Brenda, and later Valerie in Hanna-Barbera's Josie and the Pussycats, and utilized by Motown to make the young Michael Jackson's voice sound "fuller" on harmonies) reached UK #1 (& top ten throught Europe) & USA #68.
- The rock trio's track was written by bassist Jack Bruce and poet Pete Brown, this Wheels Of Fire album cut reached UK #26 & USA #6, and #1 in Australia.
- This truly remarkable psychedelic rock track which was the Theme from the film Head (the very antithesis of their TV series) starring the group. It was written by Gerry Goffin & Carole King with Micky Dolenz providing vocals. The track includes chimes, tubular bells and aquatic sound effects. But the hostile reception to the project resulted in the single failing to reach the UK top 50, and limp to USA #62. Yet its iconic opening and closing images as the movie theme (with the band drowning whilst chasing dollar notes) was ripped off by a Seattle grunge band who did not record "Rainbow Chaser" for their album cover to "Nevermind".
- The Birmingham based R&B and soul group discovered Ska music signed to Parlophone records and recorded the group's Norman Haines original composition scoring a UK #25 hit.
- The Philadelphia soul vocal group reached USA #35 with producer's Thom Bell and William Hart song.
- The Cheshire born veteren of the Merseybeat scene since 1962, got signed to the Beatles Apple record label, and released this Joe Cocker-esque rock song which surprising failed to chart at the time in the UK, and only reached USA #117. Maybe the label should have revealed it was written and produced by George Harrison and features Paul McCartney at bass, Ringo Starr on drums, Cream's Eric Clapton on guitar, and Nicky Hopkins on organ and piano.
- The relatively gritty & funky track was written and produced by Frank Wilson. It reached USA #32 (R&B #8).
- This MGM records release was another old school midtempo country pop ballad, unfortunately it was no longer 1961 any more so it only reached UK #44 & USA #104.

"Porpoise Song" is beyond description. Anyone who thought The Monkees were talentless nobodies thrown from the streets as a marketing tool (that's X Factor) would have all doubts dispelled by that...well. Work of transcendent art is perhaps the simplest. Lord alone knows what a jarring shock it must have been for their youngest fans. Perhaps they had matured along with the band's sound by then.

The Australian rock band's penultimate hooray spent five weeks at #2 in their own country behind behind the best selling single of the 1960s Down Under. They finish two weeks short of that feat in my Retro Rewind Chart. Six new entries from:- Written by R. Dean Taylor, Frank Wilson, Pam Sawyer, Deke Richards, this tale about the worry of producing a child out of wedlock reached USA #1 (R&B #2) & UK #15. Diana Ross was the only Supreme to sing on this track.
- This USA #3 was written by John Kay and Rushton Moreve of the Canadian Hard rock group.
- This UK #4 was written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, and the American soul pop group featured lead singer Johnny Johnson from Florida. Due to a lack of success in their native country they disbanded in 1969. And the lead singer took control of the band's name moving to London and having a few more hits at the beginning of the 1970s.
- The jazzy drinking song written and originally recorded by Laura Nyro, gave the successful easy listening sunshine pop outfit a USA #13 hit.
- Written and produced by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, this Motown R&B/soul song reached USA #24 (R&B #11).
- Taken from the legendary jazz pianist's 1968 album "Nuff Said!", it was later turned into a big UK hit for the Four Tops.

"Love Child" was Motown moving into social realism. A really bold move in the period. Given that even segregation had barely been illegalized, to sing about extra-marital sex was fairly bold, but for the number 1 family-friendly group to do it...

Love both the song and the name Eloise. If I had a daughter and my choice I'd call her that. And when she's old enough tell her she's named after a Damned song.
Of course the definitive cover of "Sympathy For The Devil" was by Laibach. Several times.
