I haven't listened to Free Peace Sweet for quite some time but I recall the biggest problem was that it was overlong and so you didn't get to enjoy the really good tracks as much as you should.

Hm. Looking at the vaspod 1996 seems to be a bloody rubbish year...
1. Cocteau Twins - BBC Sessions
2. Cocteau Twins - Milk & Kisses
3. Neutral Milk Hotel - On Avery Island
4, Cardiacs - Sing To God
5. Laibach - Jesus Christ Superstars
6. OMD - Universal
7. Wedding Present - Saturnalia
8. Morcheeba - Who Can You Trust
9. Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
10. Republica - Republica

If a BBC session compilo doesn't count, then the one popping in at the bottom is Sleeper - The It Girl.

I didn't actually realise the Republica album was as early as 1996. Although it won't affect my list because Republica were unutterably awful. I mean, I'm considering including Shed Seven and Ocean Colour Scene in my Top 10 but even I have to draw the line somewhere.

At the risk of losing all credibility, this seems to be the only list I can put together for 1996. :\
1. Toni Braxton - Secrets 2. Madonna - Evita 3. The Braxtons - So Many Ways 4. Boyzone - A Different Beat 5. Kula Shaker - K
* there were loads of great singles out that year, but album-wise I seem to have only bought a few.
