Nostalgia time. What are your top albums from 20 years ago ?
If enough people post a list, we'll be able to determine Haven's favourites.

This probably the year I'm going to have to do most whittling for. Although looking at the library on my computer, there are quite a few albums with 1996 dates that I think weren't released in the UK until 1997, so that'll help.

That Eels album is one that would probably make my list, but I've chosen to exclude it because it didn't get a UK release until January 1997. I'm not saying you should all do that (especially as I know not everyone on Haven is in the UK) but it's one way of winnowing my contenders.

the big difference from now is how in sync we all are, now there so much music we all buy or listen to different stuff but then we all seem to agree on most of the same records and thats why they sold so well .

Dodgy - Free Peace Sweet was my #1 album released that year although it had its 5 months at #1 in my chart January - May 1997.
The Wedding Present - Saturnalia and Mini were both released in 1996. The latter was a 6-track EP but counted as an album.
A track from Mini which sort of shows that David Gedge was already heading in the sort of direction that became Cinerama.

I think that when there's good music in the charts (i.e. music you like) there is less incentive to go around and search for it. By 1996 I already had internet, so I could get recommendations from others but was not in the same position to "check it out".

But thing is you didnt have to search for it as if it was on the shelf you could see it, I would go round about 4 record shops a week and try and get as much new stuff for 99p or 1.99 as possible, you could do that in 1996 it was only HMV and virgin that hadnt started doing that yet. Well maybe in 1996 but I first started buying 99p/1.99 singles in 1990.

With regards to singles, 1999 until around 2003 I would go to the record stores and look at the new release shelves and Virgin had listening posts too so you could listen to a bit of the song and hear what it sounded like.
From 2003 I would go with a list because I had discovered that so many new singles were not put in the new release section but straight into the A-Z section.
I bought an enormous number of singles between 1999 and 2006 and they were taking over the home. It was quite a relief once I started getting downloads, but in some way my chart totally drifted away from the UK chart at that point and by 2009 they had really drifted so far apart and I stopped knowing how UK #1 singles sounded.
This topic is about top albums but all these artists also had hit singles and we probably knew the singles first and thus introduced us to the artists.
I bought Ash's "1977" and was impressed too - it was better than I had expected. Not sure about the "extra" track too much...

It is about albums but i didnt buy albums much then just singles, only 2 of my top 10 albums I actually bought at the time instead I had every Manics single, every Sheryl Crow, every Bluetones single etc etc it probably was a false economy in the long run.

I bought very few singles back then, and bought the Shine compilations, which were like an indie/britpop version of Now...
I bought several albums though.
"Free Peace Sweet" is an interesting album really in that I find the album grows as you get through it and that actually means when you get past almost all of the singles. The last of the singles to appear on it is "Found You" which in my mind is an underrated gem of theirs. I think I bought the album around November 1996 as I recall it was #3 for me that month, #2 in December then took over #1 in January 1997 (with Saturnalia being my #1 in the last few months of 1996). During this era it was the only album to remain my #1 for 5 months.
Near the end there are 2 tracks the drift into each other: Jack The Lad and Long Life. However I guess it doesn't appear on most people's lists because they never listened to the entire album rather than that they did and didn't like it. But then that's the reason why so many albums don't appear on mine..
I can't remember if I bought "Everything Must Go". I don't recall it being in my album chart, but did like the band and their singles, and did buy Generation Terrorists in 1992.
