If another song better encapsulates the joy of listening to rock music, then I have not heard it. It gives the Velvet Underground their second Retro Rewind #1.
A monster 13 new entries from:
- Written by the group's lead vocalist and guitarist Ray Dorset and produced by Barry Murray, this swamp rocker reached UK #1 & Ireland #5.
- This soft rock Oscar winning song written for the 1970 film Lovers and Other Strangers, by Fred Karlin, and Bread's Robb Wilson (Robb Royer) and Arthur James (Jimmy Griffin) reached USA #3 (AC #1), UK #18, Canada #5 & Australia #10.
- Written by Kris Kristofferson with Fred Foster about his then lover Janis Joplin. Joplin subsequently recorded this cover for inclusion on her Pearl album only a few days before her death in October 1970. The first time Kristofferson knew of her recording of it was the day after she died. This Paul A. Rothchild produced posthumous release peaked at #1 in the USA & Australia; and went top ten in Canada & New Zealand but failed to chart in the UK.
- Again written by The Corporation Motown songwriting quartet of Berry Gordy, Alphonzo Mizell, Freddie Perren and Deke Richards, this uptempo soul pop track hit USA #2 (R&B #1) & UK #25 for the quintet from Gary, Indiana.
- The trademark boogie shuffle American Beauty album cut written by the San Francisco roots rock group's Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and lyricist Robert Hunter was released as a single peaking at USA #64.
- The Man Who Sold The World album cut was released as a b-side to the more commercial sounding, but much inferior "Holy Holy" single. The irony was whilst daytime Radio 1 spurned the A-side; the nighttime DJ's including John Peel gave the blues heavy rock B-side a few spins, not least as it was a homage to the likes of Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath, and featured a spontaneously impersonation of his friend Marc Bolan's vibrato in the final verse.
- This mellow soulful USA #1 (R&B #1) & UK #8 written by producer Norman Whitfield with Barrett Strong was the final Temptations single to feature founding members Eddie Kendricks (Robbie Williams/Zayn Malik syndrome) and Paul Williams (ill health).
- The pop/rock band formed in Adelaide, South Australia scored an Australian #4 hit with a progressive heavy rock cover of the Paul McCartney Revolver album cut. But the group shortly disbanded as guitarist Rick Springfield was singled out for greater things in the near future.
- The American rock band from Providence, Rhode Island became USA #7 one hit wonders with this catchy pop rock tune.
- This midtempo soulful USA #40 (R&B #9) & UK #36 hit was written by Motown staff writer Gloria Jones.
- Detroit's Mr. Excitement scored his last active USA #56 (R&B #9) hit before suffering a near fatal heart attack in 1975 which ended his career, until his death in 1984.
- The Canadian group's hard rock song written by Burton Cummings and Kurt Winter peaked at USA #43 & Canada #5.
- This soulful black power funk anthem peaked at USA #72 (R&B #11), but has been used in a number of film & TV soundtracks since then.

The Canadian singer/songwriter scores a Retro Rewind number one with this melancholic introspective effort .... Seven new entries arrive from:
- This UK #2, USA #5 (& #1 in Australia, Ireland, & Spain) first single of McCartney's solo career, this New York Ram album session recording (neither it nor its flip-side made the subsequent album), was written and previewed during the Beatles' Let It Be sessions in 1969. The observational lyrics describe the drudgery and sadness of an unnamed woman's life at work and at home.
- This Marc Bolan penned, Tony Visconti produced Glam Rock single spent six weeks at #1 in the UK, and topped the Irish charts, largely thanks to its lengthy singalong outro. It was less successful internationally peaking at USA #72.
- This soulful rocking All Things Must Pass album track appeared as the flipside on his UK (& many other territories in Europe & Australasia) single "My Sweet Lord". But in the USA it was released as a separate single (where Isn't It A Pity was the b-side to My Sweet Lord) peaking at USA #10.
- This blue eyed soul rocker was culled from the American pop rock group's eighth album, More Golden Grass. It reached USA #15, but hung around the top 40 for a sizeable number of weeks.
- The Detroit group's USA #38 & UK #12 soulful pop track was produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland and written by them (using the pseudonym Edyth Wayne) with Daphne Dumas and Ron Dunba.
- Written by brother of Barry Ryan, Paul Ryan's interesting lyrical & dreamy ballad reached UK #14 for the 1970 Irish ESC winner (Simultaneously Frank Sinatra's take on his composition "I Will Drink The Wine" was on the climb to UK #16). In truth this song sounds perfect for late 1970s period Olivia Newton John.
- The final original material UK top 40 hit (UK #32) by the 38 year old Surrey born singer & actress was an easy listening reworking of the French ballad "C'est Le Refrain de Ma Vie" She spent most of the 1970s in semi-retirement in France bringing up her children, but from the early 1980s returned to acting and especially the theatre where she won an Olivier in 1982 after starring as Maria von Trapp in a revival of The Sound of Music.

Good to see you chart the brilliant Stoned Love at #1 although my fav post-Ross single is yet to come.
I see you're not over impressed by Diana's Remember Me - for me her finest moment sounding chilling and soulful, almost anguished. Totally compelling.

The fourth Retro Rewind number one hit by John Fogerty, Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford on my charts .... Elsewhere, eleven more new entries (I'm starting to think David Hepworth was correct after all)....
- The title track of his forthcoming Motown studio album, was inspired by a police brutality incident witnessed by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, the song was composed by Benson, Al Cleveland and Marvin Gaye and produced by Gaye himself. This meditation on the troubles and problems of the world reached USA #2 (R&B #1) & Australia #5. But it failed to chart in the UK where notably (thanks to the book brilliant I bought in my Avator for this factoid) Radio 1 Breakfast DJ and soul fan Tony Blackburn rubbished the track comparing it unfavourably to his earlier material, and criticised its lyrical intent. Well the future 2002 winner of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! did later get banned by the BBC for two weeks in 1973 after he said the miners should go back to work after a Power Cut stopped his show....
- Written by Latin jazz and mambo musician Tito Puente in 196, this Latin Rock "Abraxas" album cover version reached USA #13.
- This extensively sampled funk workout was written and produced by the Godfather of Soul, and was recorded with the original J.B.'s (plus Fred Wesley). It peaked at USA #29 (R&B #3).
- This much covered USA #11 folk pop "recover" of the Jimmy Cliff UK hit was taken from the Tea for the Tillerman album.
- The anthemic USA #21 hard rock commercial breakthrough for Vincent Furnier's Detroit Shock Rock group was taken from their debut album Love It to Death.
- This stand alone UK #8 Hard Rock recording was written and produced by the Hertfordshire based group. Interestingly, it's original title was "Prostitute" but Harvest Records persuaded them to change its title.
- This USA #23 white R&B recording was taken from the Northern Irish singer/songwriter's His Band and the Street Choir album.
- The John Fogerty penned hard rocking Pendulum album cut was the lesser played double A-side of Have You Ever Seen The Rain.
- The Paul McCartney penned lesser played double A-side of Another Day was a tense blues rocker about a male lover who has been spurned who then shoots her dead featuring a fierce vocal delivery on a track which is basically AC/DC before they existed. Unsurprisingly it got banned by the BBC.
- Taken from the Scottish folk singer/songwriter's 9th studio album H.M.S. Donovan this very folky anti-Seal clubbing anthem was his penultimate hit in the USA reaching USA #84 (& Australia #60)
- This beautifully minimalistic John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album cut was posthumously remixed and released as a single in 1982 to promote his forthcoming "John Lennon Collection" best of. The Las Vegas male pop vocal trio took an easy listening cover of this song to USA #42 in 1971 (their final top 100 hit).

Paul McCartney grabs his second post Beatles number one hit .... how many more will achieve in the 1970s? Elsewhere, seven more new entries from:
- The former Beatle UK #6 & USA #11 preachy anthem produced by Phil Spector. It's title was turned into a comedy catchphrase by Tooting "urban guerilla" "Wolfie" Smith, a young Marxist leader of Tooting Popular Front. During the four series of Citizen Smith, John Lennon's former songwriting partner made a cameo appearance in the show in 1979.
- The a cappella song written by singer Janis Joplin with the poets Michael McClure and Bob Neuwirth considered to be a rejection of consumerism. The "Pearl" album cut was subsequently used in many TV car adverts by the manufacturer of the same name.
- The perky pop 4th placed UK entry in 1971 ESC was written by David Myers and composed by John Worsley and performed by the Northern Irish singer peaked at UK #4.
- The rocking 1970 Elton John album cut was released as the flip side of "Your Song" which was still hanging around both UK & USA's charts. As a result this recording deservedly received a sizeable number of spins.
- Written by Robert Lamm, this rocking III album cut featured Terry Kath on lead vocals.
- Written by Mike Appel, Jim Cretecos, and Wes Farrell this superior bubblegum pop single reached USA #6 & Canada #1. But singer David Cassidy hated this Bell records release.
- The Love Story film theme written by Francis Lai, now added lyrics by Carl Sigman. This much covered classy easy listening record reached USA #9 (AC #1) & UK #4.

Judy Collins' "Amazing Grace" is a truly beautiful song. One of those that hung around in the charts for absolutely ages. Had it focussed its sales in a "normal" chart run it would have been a deserved number 1. Don't know what it is with that, "My Way" and "A Scottish Soldier" that had them with greater longevity than altitude.

Good to see you chart the brilliant Stoned Love at #1 although my fav post-Ross single is yet to come. I see you're not over impressed by Diana's Remember Me - for me her finest moment sounding chilling and soulful, almost anguished. Totally compelling. My five favourite post Supremes Diana Ross singles are to come, so she may very well grab a Retro Rewind #1 or two (My favourite Diana Ross song may very well surprise you). Whilst Stoned Love is my favourite Supremes single. For me I admire what Remember Me was trying to do, but it just does not quite pull it for my ears liking as I can easily imagine Aretha Franklin singing the same song with far more nuance and emotion.

I guess these records were bought my non conventional record buyers ... hence the longevity .... the sort who today who buy Adele; Michael Buble; and "classical popera covers album promoted by unnamed act on Alan Titchmarsh's mid afternoon weekday run up to Xmas shows on ITV" albums.

- This self penned effort was taken from the CSN&Y member's debut solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name. This tense atmospheric jazzy country rock recording featured Stephen Stills & Joni Mitchell on backing vocals.

- The Los Angeles pop rock band's reworking of Hoyt Axton original topped the USA & Canadian charts, and became an international hit including UK #25 & Australia #8.
- The Jamaican vocal/instrumental reggae duo's Trojan records release. Topped the Jamaican & UK charts, and peaked at USA #22. It was produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, and was the first record a then 18 year old Sly Dunbar played on.
- Taken from the self titled progressive rock supergroup's debut album, keyboardist Keith Emerson, singer, bassist, and producer Greg Lake, and drummer and percussionist Carl Palmer reached USA #48 with Greg Lake's folky composition.
- The British mixed race soul band's UK #22 hit was written by the group's lead vocalist Errol Brown and bassist Tony Wilson.
- This USA #19 (AC #6) song written by Dorothea Joyce, was a near solo soulful ballad vocal showcase for Marilyn McCoo. Which was not too surprising seeing how it first appeared on the self titled 1970 debut album by Diana Ross.
- This country pop cover of the Bob Dylan penned 1970 New Morning album track, became the debut single by the Australian singer peaking at UK #7 & USA #25 (AC #1); and Australia #7. It was produced by Bruce Welch & John Farrar.
- Alexis Korner's Collective Consciousness Society reached UK #7 with their Mickie Most produced jazz blues rock reworking of the Donovan original.
- The Irish born, Swindon, Wiltshire raised pianist/singer/songwriter's uptempo single only peaked at UK #40. But it fared far better across Europe, and even topped the Dutch charts.
- The Chicago gospel, soul and R&B singing group who were signed to Epic records in 1967 and enjoyed minimal success, immediately hit the charts with their debut Stax records release peaking at USA #27 (R&B #6).

20% of the chart is new entries from:
- The 7 minute plus rock classic taken from the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was inspired by a love story that originated as a poem The Story of Layla and Majnun in 5th-Century Iran, which his good friend George Harrison told Eric Clapton about. Unfortunately the former Cream guitarist was falling in love with the former Beatles wife, Patti Boyd. Originally a Eric Clapton ballad until Duane Allman came up with the rocking guitar riff (in addition to Jim Gordon's piano coda). This song originally failed to chart in the UK and peaked at USA #51, but it became an English language #1 hit in Japan. Its 1972 reissue saw it hit new peaks of USA #10 & UK #7, and top the chart in France, and hit #2 in Australia & New Zealand. Then a 1982 reissue saw it establish UK & Irish #4 peaks.
- The New York singer/songwriter's emotional USA #4 & UK #4 hit.
- The John/Taupin penned title track and theme song from the movie "Friends" starring Sean Bury was a stringladen piano ballad which hit USA #34.
- The much covered American soft rock group singer David Gates penned USA #4 (AC #1) hit. This failed to chart in the UK. However, Telly Savalas ghastly version peaked at UK #1 in 1975.
- Written by Clifton Davis for The Supremes. Motown boss decided the song was too good for them and got the Indiana family group to record it, so resulting in a USA #2 & UK #33 hit. This much covered song was later a hit for Gloria Gaynor & The Communards.
- The much covered 1966 (USA CW #1) hit for Jack Greene, gave the King of Rock'n'Roll a UK #6, where it was only a B-side in the USA.
- The Cry of Love rock R&B album cut was influenced by Curtis Mayfield and became a USA #59 hit.
- The protest song written by the country folk legend peaked at USA #58 (CW #3), but more importantly became his nickname if not his signature tune.

The Motown artist's socially aware soulful single gives him his second Retro Rewind chart-topper. Elsewhere, eight more entries from:
- Marc Bolan's 1970 T Rex album cut which he still played in his live sets into 1977, featured a great guitar riff; and string arrangement by producer Tony Visconti.
- The chart breakthrough of the UK Glam Rock group. This Chinn & Chapman written & produced bubblegum track was the first single featuring the key line up of vocalist Brian Connolly, bass player Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker. It reached UK #13, but was a major international hit topping the charts in South Africa, The Netherlands, Sweden & Denmark.
- The gospel pop song composed by Gene MacLellan, gave the Canadian group a USA #2 (AC #4) & Canada #10 hit.
- Taking the centuries old English folk tune "The Maid Freed from the Gallows". This traditional arr. by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant album "III" version starts off as a folk track, before exploding into a rock track featuring electric guitar, banjo, drums, & bass guitar.
- The piano led USA #34 pop hit written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Harry Nilsson for his 1970 album The Point!
- The six minute plus final song on the album "Tumbleweed Connection" was a complicated four part jazzy gospel composition influenced by Laura Nyro. It has since been covered by Phil Collins (featuring Eric Clapton); and Toto.
- The original bluesy rock No Dice album track written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of the Swansea/Liverpool Power Pop group. An evergreen Reality TV singing talent show cover, it is most famous for the global hit versions by Harry Nilsson & Mariah Carey. Tragically, taking into account the demise of the two songwriters, it's chorus lyrics have a rather macabre feel to them....
- The gospelly All Things Must Pass album cut showed a heavy Phil Spector produced Wall Of Sound to the track featuring Derek & The Dominos on the backing track.
