2. Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
Towards the end of 1965 I made a remark that the Beatles were getting a lot of #1s but weren't getting the big ones. Well that has now changed, Day Tripper a massive hit and also this one, and whilst Day Tripper was mostly a Lennon song, Eleanor Rigby is totally a McCartney song, so both of the main songwriters have had big hits now.
A ballad about two lonely people, Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie, with a backing of strings, this certainly captured our hearts. I did once remark some time ago that this with Yellow Submarine as its B-side is one of the greatest double-A sides ever released counting both songs, as you get the nature of both the serious and the fun side of the Beatles in their music.

1 River Deep Mountain High - Ike And Tina Turner
Written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector and produced by Phil Spector with his own band playing and Ike Turner not actually participating in any manner but getting credited by arrangement.
Phil Spector has produced 3 of the last 4 number ones of the year and Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich also wrote the #1 of 1963 (the real #1 of that year, not the one that ended up top on points), which was the Ronettes - Be My Baby.
When this was not a hit in the USA it kind of broke things up for Phil Spector. In the UK it reached #3.
