The retro chart is back after the recess and we begin 1966 with Herb Alpert preventing the Beatles from having both the top 2. There was no new UK chart this week. There was a new US chart which has provided us with new entries, the highest of which is by a Welsh singer performing a James Bond theme song.

As "Day Tripper" gets a 4th week in a static top 3, it looks set to become their biggest hit to date. Tom Jones climbs to potentially challenge it,
The highest new entry comes from the Kinks, a song of theirs I know from it being in the ukulele Wednesdays songbook as it wasn't a UK hit, but did reach the UK top 40. Maybe they'll achieve better things in 1966, but so far they have not lived up to their potential and I expected them to be the next biggest 60s band after the Beatles, and ahead of the Rolling Stones, but that hasn't happened so far, and the Rolling Stones were very successful on this chart in 1965.
Mitch Ryder leads the lower batch of new entries. This song from the US chart but it did enter the UK chart a bit later.
It's early days in 1966 but we'll "explode" soon in what I was expecting to be the best of all the years. (It's a handful of great songs in the next few weeks but some really great ones).

-- ( -- ) Under Your Spell Again - Johnny Rivers
The Beatles get a 5th week at #1 and Herb Alpert is still #2. He has another tune on the next playlist. Two Beatles covers enter the chart lower down. There were 2 covers of Michelle, this version reached #1 in the UK chart, and another version by songwriters Rogers Greenaway & Cook going under the name of David & Jonathan, which was a smaller hit in the UK but did also get them a US top 40 hit. I had to decide between them and chose the Overlanders version, but I'd rather be charting the original Beatles version (and whilst the other retro chart allowed that, mine does not). The other Beatles cover, "Girl" also has a rival cover version by a 1966 band called The Truth (not the same as the 1983 band).
In any case, looking higher up, "My Love" by Petula Clark was a US #1. Two different songs called "My Love" have reached UK #1 but this isn't one of them. It actually peaked at #4 in the UK.
"Groovy Kind Of Love" is the same song that Phil Collins covered in 1988 and got to #1 with. This version is slightly more uptempo. "Mirror Mirror" is of course unrelated to Dollar's top 10 hit.
Frank Sinatra seems to be singing about life in general in his song, not about 1965 that has just passed by. But that was a very good year. Let's see how good 1966 is. Anyway, with the royalties of this song, perhaps Frankie can buy his daughter a new pair of boots.

22 January 1966:
1 ( 1 ) Day Tripper - Beatles < 6th week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) My Love - Petula Clark 3 ( 9 ) Groovy Kind Of Love - Mindbenders 4 ( 2 ) Spanish Flea - Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass (#2[4]) 5 ( 3 ) Thunderball - Tom Jones (#3) 6 ( 10 ) Mirror Mirror - Pinkerton's Assorted Colours 7 ( 8 ) A Well Respected Man - Kinks 8 ( -- ) Lightnin' Strikes - Lou Christie 9 ( -- ) Uptight (Everything's Alright) - Stevie Wonder 10 ( 4 ) We Can Work It Out - Beatles (#3)

21 ( -- ) Going To A Go-Go - Miracles 22 ( 16 ) Attack - Toys (#16) 23 ( 30 ) Like A Baby - Len Barry 24 ( 14 ) You Make It Move - Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich (#10) 25 ( 19 ) You've Been Cheatin' - Impressions (#19) 26 ( 13 ) Keep On Running - Spencer Davis Group (#4) 27 ( 26 ) The Water Is Over My Head - Rockin' Berries (#26) 28 ( -- ) Midnight To Six Man - Pretty Things 29 ( 17 ) No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) - T-Bones (#12) 30 ( 36 ) I've Got To Be Somebody - Billy Joe Royal
31 ( 37 ) It Was A Very Good Year Frank Sinatra 32 ( 29 ) Sandy - Ronny & The Daytonas (#29) 33 ( 22 ) Let's Get Together - We Five (#18) 34 ( 18 ) The Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel (#2[2]) 35 ( 40 ) Girl - St Louis Union 36 ( 24 ) Apple Of My Eye - Roy Head & The Traits (#20) 37 ( 21 ) Spanish Eyes - Al Martino (#10) 38 ( 35 ) Take Me To Your Heart Again - Vince Hill (#35) 39 ( 28 ) Just Like Me - Paul Revere & The Raiders (#24) 40 ( 31 ) Take Me For What I'm Worth - The Searchers (#28)

-- ( -- ) Jealous Heart - Connie Francis -- ( -- ) I Stand Accused - Merseybeats -- ( -- ) Tchaikovsky One - Second City Sound -- ( -- ) Recovery Fontella Bass
The chart is starting to show signs of taking off, with more classic entries, and in the next few weeks there will just be more and more. I don't think the Beatles would have stood up 6 weeks against the barrage of what is about to come. (Remember "Help!" got knocked off after just 1 week).
For Lou Christie this was his first UK hit (peaking at #11) but in the US he had 2 previous (The Gyspy Cried and Two Faces Have I) but both failed on this chart, so it's his first hit here and he's straight into the top 10 with it.
Stevie Wonder also has two previous singles. Both charted, "Fingertips Pt 2" to #16 and "Hey Harmonica Man" to #13. This one entering at #9 beats them both. And he's still only 15. More Motown with Dionne Warwick and the Miracles entering this chart.
Barbra Streisand goes for an old 20s song. I guess given the lyrics of this song, a 2nd hand version is more appropriate than the original...

Your charts include much more hits from my chart, than another retro 60s (and 70s too) thread.
Didn't know about another Jackie Lee, I heard only this lady with the same name :
My # 1s (based only on UK charts) :
01.01 : Seekers - The Carnival Is Over (2 weeks at # 1) 15.01 : Cilla Black - Love's Just A Broken Heart (1 week at # 1) 22.01 : Barbra Streisand - Second Hand Rose (1 week at # 1) 29.01 : Janie Jones - Witches Brew (4 weeks at # 1) 26.02 : Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walkin' (4 weeks at # 1) 26.03 : Petula Clark - My Love (5 weeks at # 1) 30.04 : Petula Clark - A Sign Of The Times (5 weeks at # 1) 21.05 : Sandie Shaw - Nothing Comes Easy (4 weeks at # 1)
So only pop classics and unique "Witches Brew" were on the top of my chart.

-- ( 26 ) Keep On Running - Spencer Davis Group (#4) -- ( 29 ) No Matter What Shape (Your Stomach's In) - T-Bones (#12) -- ( 33 ) Let's Get Together - We Five (#18) -- ( 34 ) The Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel (#2[2]) -- ( 36 ) Apple Of My Eye - Roy Head & The Traits (#20) -- ( 37 ) Spanish Eyes - Al Martino (#10) -- ( 38 ) Take Me To Your Heart Again - Vince Hill (#35) -- ( 39 ) Just Like Me - Paul Revere & The Raiders (#24) -- ( 40 ) Take Me For What I'm Worth - The Searchers (#28)
Petula Clark does climb to #1 but I think she's quite lucky to get to #1 with this song, as it's the timing that has helped it get here. All the big ones are coming up in the next few weeks and there are better songs than this that won't make it to #1. In any case it gives her a 2nd #1, and is the 3rd for songwriter Tony Hatch, who also wrote Bobby Rydell's "Forget Him" in addition to this song and "Downtown".
Frank Sinatra drops a place to #32 but his daughter lands in the chart firmly on her boots at #4. I did consider whether this song should enter at #1 in which case it would be a debut in that position as she has not yet charted. In any case it has a boot-in at #1 for next week, but she'll have a battle holding on to the spot for a significant time with all that is about to appear.
Last Dreamer mentioned the wonderful Witches Brew, and that does achieve the 2nd highest entry this week at #13. A decent song by Roy Orbison which didn't do that well in the UK chart comes in next.
"My Heart Is Empty Without You" - this Supremes song sounds a lot like another song.... Ah yeah - "Dreaming Of You" by the Coral. Except of course the Supremes song was 36 years earlier. So I look up whether anyone else has spotted the similarity and yes, quite a few people have already pointed that out.

Two more classics entering the chart as Nancy Sinatra gets to #1. The Mamas and Papas with what in my opinion is their most classic song, and another Herb Alpert instrumental classic, popular in particular among Leyton Orient supporters, and with an arrangement similar to my own Catmania.

Nancy Sinatra remains at #1 and this week's entries include a catchy hit single for the Small Faces with a silly title, a bit in the style of Do Wah Diddy Diddy and of course Manfred Mann also released a "Sha La La" but that is a different song. I was surprised to see that this song was mostly written by Kenny Lynch, whose own career on this chart has not been particularly good.
A Rolling Stones single that reached #1 on most UK compiled charts but not the Record Retailer one gets the next entry, and there are 2 songs entering with Frankie Valli in it, the song that only peaked at #50 in its original version but managed 3 weeks in a row in that position but was later covered by the (Detroit) Spinners a lot more successfully when that added a "Forgive Me Girl" section, and another song credited to him as solo as will be a few of these in the next couple of years, but actually the Four Seasons were involved in these too.
The original version of I Fought The Law was recorded by the Crickets in 1960 and the song was written by Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison. Bobby Fuller will record a Buddy Holly song too so he was clearly a big fan. And then within a year or so he died suddenly. This song has surprisingly turned up on a number of "you didn't know they were covers" articles but the writers mistakenly thought this was the original (referring to the later cover by The Clash).

I'm impressed by "Witches Brew" result. Predict "California Dreamin'" as your next # 1.

In spite of the prediction, there is no change in the top 3 this week. Perhaps the Mamas & the Papas can take over next week. Surprisingly this song was not a big UK hit in 1966, although it was a hit again in 1997 when it did reach the UK top 10. In 1990 there was also a UK hit cover version by River City People, who in my chart had a bigger hit called "What's Wrong With Dreaming..." and in the same year of 1990 we had Chynna Phillips peak at #2 with Brian Wilson's daughters. But can her mum and dad go one better than she managed? (Brian Wiison already has). The other members are Dan Doherty and "Mama" Cass Elliot, the latter of those being Jewish.
Sgt Barry Sadler's army boots were made for marching, and in the US he marched them all the way to the top of the chart, replacing Nancy. We'll see if he can match that here and obviously this song is about the war in Vietnam that was going on at the time.

We weren't sure if it was going to make it, but California Dreamin' does finally land at #1. Simon & Garfunkel peaked at #2 with The Sound Of Silence and will be hoping to go one better this time. This song flies in at #6 in a top 9 that is full of non-movers and singles swapping places and replaces Witches Brew which drops out of the top 10.
There are big entries in both of the next two weeks to look forward to.
Of the other entries this week, one of the Hollies most classic songs. Also a Shangri-Las song that, like Barry Sadler, is based around the Vietnam War, this time how it is keeping them apart. Being Shangri-Las we expect it to end in tragedy and for her to receive a letter saying he died in battle, but we don't actually get to find out...
The next 2 entries are very familiar. You Don't Know Me was a bigger UK hit in 1994 for Dawn Penn, although her reggae version was actually recorded only one year after this one. And of course, we all know the Batman theme.

Wow, what a week. The 60s britpop wins out new-entry wise with 3 entries inside the top 10 to attempt to end the American strong-hold on the top of the chart that we have had with the Mamas & The Papas and Simon & Garfunkel in the top 2 and Nancy Sinatra before them. We will have to see now whether Simon & Garfunkel can make it or whether it will be another #2 for them. That song though does have a UK connection as Paul Simon was in Widnes when he wrote it.
Or maybe this will be the moment the Kinks finally get a #1, thus meeting my expectation of them being the next biggest artist after the Beatles, who themselves release a classic this week but it only comes in as the 3rd highest entry, but then Hold Tight! is also a classic.
And so is "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore". Originally done by Frankie Valli, who as I mentioned is sometimes credited alone on songs but the Four Seasons were still playing on them. (This was the case on all Frankie Valli solo singles during the 1960s). However it had flopped for him as a single release, not reaching the US hot 100.

A second week for the Kinks at #1 with the Who in hot pursuit and we'll see if they can achieve next week something they never managed in the UK chart. In the "modern" era, the Who also had a #2 with "You Better You Bet" in 1981. That song was kept out by "The Best Of Times" by Styx, which had come in off the US chart to top mine.
The highest new entry is one of the Isley Brothers classics, and then we have one of the Shadows various vocal hits, another hit for the Righteous Brothers who have I think by this point left Phil Spector but still somewhat mimics the "wall" of sound (but this effect has been copied by many others now and is present in the Walker Brothers hits too and they have no connection with Spector), and I think Gary Lewis and The Vogues were both US hits.
Kenneth McKellar was the UK's Eurovision entry and in spite of it being not a particularly good song, it still came 2nd. Perhaps if they send a big name artist next year they could actually win it...

The end of March so my first birthday chart not counting the actual date of birth and the Who get to #1 in time for it. There will be a little pause again before the next chart I post, as the festivals are taking a toll and the current week always has to take precedence. Still I do have one playlist for April that covers 5 weeks and has just 30 songs on it. This particular week has a very large number of new entries, 11 making it in, two that are listed but failed to chart.
Among those entries, another single by the Who, "A Legal Matter" seems to be about the financial and legal side of a divorce, something I am going through right now, with the legal financial settlement having just been done.
A UK #1 in that list, the second for the Spencer Davis Group, and a US #1, not Cher (got stuck at #2 behind the Righteous Brothers) but the Young Rascals.

The Who hold on to #1 in an unchanged top 3 but Dusty Springfield throws a spanner into the works by flying in at #4 challenging for the top spot. She has reached #1 once before, with "I Only Want To Be With You" right at the end of 1963. She first hit the charts as part of The Springfields.
Another diva to enter the chart is Cilla Black, who beats Dionne Warwick as to who gets the hit with Alfie. The song was first offered to Sandie Shaw but after she turned it down, it was offered to Cilla Black who insisted that Burt Bacherach come over to England and arrange it himself, including him actually playing the piano part. He agreed and so it got recorded.
Cilla Black's biggest hit on this chart so far "You're My World" was originally an Italian song, and the same applies here to Dusty's entry.
In between those we have a hit for Crispian St Peters. His bigger UK hit will not be reaching this chart as that is a cover of a song that has already been a hit.
Petula Clark completes the trio of British divas entering, and crooner Al Martino sneaks in at the bottom.

As is always possible nowadays I've managed to find the original of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me (called "Io Che Non Vivo (Senza Te)" )

Only 3 entries this week, with only 3 on the list. It may not be an original song but Dusty Springfield's wonderful performance of this song is too strong for the Who to get a 3rd week on top.

Having reached #1 with "California Dreaming", we now have "Monday Monday" enter the chart as the highest new entry. Of the rest, we have a cover of Them's "Gloria", some weird song by a David McCallum that isn't on Spotify and apparently he was some TV star at the time, and Herman's Hermits cashing in on the British Invasion of the USA by covering another old English song for them, this one made famous in the UK by George Formby although he didn't actually write it.
Bob Dylan's done better stuff and we'll hear one of those very soon. I have no idea really how Ray Charles got in but just to make up the numbers. I liked some of his music in the early 60s (and he even had a #1) but he seems to do too many dull ballads now. And they're generally not on Spotify (some earlier ones are).
