HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 4th NOVEMBER 1984
After five weeks at the top Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey finally give up the Retro Chart crown as they make way for Duran Duran.
‘The Wild Boys’ becomes Duran Duran’s sixth Retro chart-topper following Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer, Rio, Union Of The Snake and The Reflex. They’ve charted with two other songs during this period and have a 100% Top Ten hit rate with ‘Is There Something I Should Know’ peaking at number 4 in March 1983 and ‘New Moon On Monday’ reaching number 9 earlier this year.
This latest number one puts Duran Duran three ahead of nearest rivals Depeche Mode and Michael Jackson, who both have three number one songs each.
Unlike ‘Together In Electric Dreams’, which featured on everybody’s chart throughout most of its impressive run, ‘The Wild Boys’, although featuring in the Top three on five charts this week, is absent from Cool Christie and Shireblogger’s charts. Has it got the staying power of ‘Electric Dreams’?
I’ll update the End of Year charts after Christmas…..has ‘Electric Dreams’ done enough to topple ’99 Red Balloons’ as our song of 1984?
Other movements on this week’s chart include Chaka Khan, as she climbs again with ‘I Feel For You’, which shares the number two spot with Limahl’s ‘Never Ending Story’, although both are a way off Duran Duran.
This week’s highest new entry is from Murray Head with ‘One Night In Bangkok’, in at number 12.
