The turn of the year did mark an anniversary - 40 years since I started doing my chart, although now I also have charts from 1960 to the start of 1967 and by 3 years time will therefore have charts all the way from the 1960 up to the end of the 2010s if I keep going on the current weekly ones.

On the subject of 1977, there does happen to be one act on my playlist who had a big UK hit in that year. One of those unexpected comebacks. (Alessi had a hit a couple of years ago, but the surprise big comeback hit last year in my chart was by Matthew Wilder).

We're into the 2nd week of 2017, and the second new #1 since Christmas - that happened last year but then it stayed on top for 7 weeks. New Old World sound like the Smiths, and they are immediately under threat from a high new entry by Dropkick Murphys, who were last in the chart when they had the Christmas #1 in 2012.

Samantha Clayton is a Canadian singer who sings in both English and French on this song.

It is 3 weeks since the last video playlist.

That means it is time for a new one:

I am really tempted to give up then I get a new release day like today and I am buzzing again , so much great music out today!!

The enormous amount of effort I have to go to in order to find the songs. Give me a playlist of 40 songs covering 4 weeks like I have for 1967 and life would be easy.

My Linux machine is not showing the screen so I have to hope a reboot will fix that. I hope I don't have to go through a load of issues again with a boot drive like I did once before. Took me a whole night to fix that time.

My iTunes script is still running, as I can see the updates, and it has a way to go. I have to start it on a Friday and so it's been going over 24 hours and won't be finished until tomorrow morning. In the olden days before they limited the requests it would complete within a couple of hours.

Then I have to run the youtube search scripts and after that, the dreaded listening phase.
The most recent playlist did not give me anything that really excited me but I can't expect a #1 every week and Dropkick Murphys are obviously hot favourites to take over from New Old World at the top.

And yeah, the #1 is good but it does just sound like what the Smiths were doing over 30 years ago.

Thing is i dont go to all that trouble. I follow the new release lists on Spotify and Release Radar which is my personal new release list generated by Spotify. Then I go down everynoise.com/spotify_new_releases.html skimming genres that I am interested in and for my favourite genres I play a bit of each, probably play about 100 songs. Takes me about an hour.

Then I just add to my list as the week goes on songs added to radio playlists, hottest records,other forum users recommendations,iTunes chart climbers,new youtube videos and I usually have about 40-60 songs. I doubt I spent more than 2 hours on it in a week and if there is anything I don't find with doing that it probably wouldnt have missed it anyway. But I have no rules just charted a song out in October as 6Music are playing it a lot.

I found that if I put a 3 second sleep between each search it won't give me 403 errors which means I can now search 1200 songs an hour, and that will get through a list of 6000 in 5 hours, which is good.

That's one issue out of the way, but I get a list of about 250 songs each week at the end of all the searching and filtering and the only way to filter further is to listen to them, and even then my playlists end up with a lot of songs.

Maybe cut back on the international pop, everynoise groups a lot if music by country and if it's something like Croatian pop I just skip it, miss out about 1000 songs by doing that also I like to look at sleeves, a sleeve can often give me a hint to where I will like it or not seems weird but really it does work.

There are 11000 tracks on everynoise each week and it takes me about 30 mins to go from top to bottom , no filtering just just my eyes skipping classical or trap music or Lithuanian reggae hehe and stopping at genres like alternative rock, emo, electronica, dream pop etc thing is I still dont think they have everything many of your songs I font remember seeing but they list stuff you didn't list on your emails either so it balances out

Eg it missed Black Star Riders as I would definitely have playlisted that sight unheard , but heard it on Radio 2 after that do it gets added even if I didn't listen to Radio 2 I would have got it if the playlist

I have a script that suggests whether a song has a foreign title or not and then I cut those. I just don't have room for them - back in 2007-2009 I used to have many foreign language hits when my search list was a lot smaller.

I'm not going to cut out artists just because of their nationality as that has provided a lot of my big hits, in particular Australia and the Nordic countries.

I use iTunes primarily to get the genres. Spotify does have genres on some but about 10% do, the rest have no genres, and whilst their being more descriptive could help, it's easier to get iTunes with their general ones to just cut the obvious ones.

However there are hundreds that come up as "Pop", "Alternative" and "Rock" and several others like "Folk", and it's a matter of listening through those. Usually a few seconds of most songs.

I'd like to hire someone to do that stage for me, and pay them, but I'd have to know they'd pick the right ones and discard the right ones.

That's maybe the thing tracks with no genre are probably the ones that everynoise miss but if an act or label doesn't take the time to add a genre to their tracks then they obviously don't want anyone to find them anyway. But on the good side everynoise doesn't just split by rock or pop it breaks the genres down into much more detail
