Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but there was a round on this in the Pop Idol competition. Can't remember what won the vote that time

Looking at your first post, given I'm now in 1972, Long Haired Lover From Liverpool has been already and reached #11 in my chart. My Ding-A-Ling is on the playlist now and will probably chart, not sure how high. But I'm expecting Chuck Berry to do a lot better when he starts appearing in my 1956-onward chart.
My Ding-A-Ling is credited to Chuck Berry as the songwriter but actually it was written by Dave Bartholomew who recorded it in 1942 with slightly different lyrics. So possibly it's a parody or just a changed lyric but certainly Berry didn't write it as such.
Dave Bartholomew is legendary though. He co-wrote a lot of Fats Domino's classics with him. He died a few months ago aged 100 but got no mention on here.
The worst #1 of 1972 was Donny Osmond's cover of "Puppy Love". Had it not been for the New Seekers though, Neil Reid would have trumped even that.
Fortunately 1972 was also a great year for rock music, highlighted by when Alice Cooper reached #1 with other rock classics charting the same week including Layla.
I can't find anything particularly terrible about "Freak Me". It's not the kind of music I prefer to listen to, but I can't see what's so bad about it.

Sheriff - will these articles on worst no1s get continued here? Or you spare them for the book released? Not that I always agree with your judgement but I like the tone you set and it is enjoyable reading.

I have no idea why "Clair" is on the list. Maybe because there are a few lyrics that sound a bit like paedophilia but it's clear he isn't having any kind of sexual relationship. He wrote songs about all sorts of things from life, which is a nice change for the "relationship" theme of so many songs.
It's clear if you listen to the lyrics that Clair is his niece, she calls him "Uncle Ray" and of course Ray(mond) was his real name, and it's how he used to babysit for her and the cute things she would say.
That song is on my playlist now for 1972. My Ding-A-Ling was on the last one.
There are 4 number ones from 1995 in here, I note the second Robson & Jerome got spared but the Outhere Brothers are the main culprits with both theirs in there. I'd agree with the first, I don't think Boom Boom Boom is bad enough although it isn't that good either. But there are worse number ones. "We Are Not Alone" isn't on the list either but it's notable that those acts had 2 number ones that year, as did Take That who got your wrath in previous years but had certainly upped their act in 1995.
