81 We Are Detective – Thompson Twins
This will be the last time for a while that you will see Thompson Twins this low in the lists. I found this one just a bit too quirky but they will soon be my favourite band so will let them off. This reached #7 in the UK.

95 Break My Stride – Matthew Wilder
That reached my chart right at the end of 1983 and in the early weeks of 1984 and peaked at #3 in my chart. He had one other hit in my chart, a song called "Freaks Of Nature", which also peaked at #3. That was in 2016.

80 Can't Get Used to Losing You – The Beat
Ok we are back. We will start with a song I really loved at the time. I knew the original as my dad played it in the car but this ska version is just as gorgeous. This was their biggest hit reaching #3 in the UK.

79 Song To The Siren – This Mortal Coil
Now an indie classic definitely one of the best indie songs of the 80s. This Tim Buckley song is performed by the amazing Liz Fraser. Wow and the first time ever I picked up the line they sampled on techno classic Messiah - Temple Of Dreams. Anyway this is just beautiful.

78 Beat It - Michael Jackson
Prepares for hate from Vast, how can I make this higher than This Mortal Coil sorry! Its not scientific really I love all these songs. Don't need to say much really. Its a US number one and UK number 3.

77 Hot Girls In Love – Loverboy
We have had them before another big US hit for them with a bit of a ZZ Top influence this time, even the video is very ZZ. This reached #11 in US.

76 Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) – Journey
One thing you will see from my 80s lists, is I don't try to be cool or trendy. I am quite happy liking This Mortal Coil and Journey. Why cant you do both!!!?? Music is appropriate for different times and moments. Sometimes they just want to play pumpin rock tunes and imagine you are speeding down a US highway other times you want to cry and go emotional. Sometimes you want to hear uplifting music other times you want to chill out. Anyway US#8 for this.

75 White Lines (Don't Do It) – Grandmaster Flash, Grandmaster Melle Mel, The Furious Five
Neil's favourite rap record of the 80s and yeh it would be in my top 10 as well. Shame the video is very very old. It was such an inventive and clever track and that bass line wow. This reached #17 in Uk and no top 100 in Us , I guess the lyrical subject was too sensitive for US radio at the time.

74 Great Southern Land – ICEHOUSE
First appearance for one of my favourite under rated bands of the 80s. I didn't know this song at the time, I heard it for the first time in the movie 'Young Einstein' and I was like wow, new Icehouse but of course it wasn't new!! It since has become one of my top 5 Icehouse songs. It just has such a great feel. Thanks to raliverpool for including Aussie hits in his retro charts or I may have missed this. It only reached #83 in UK but 5 in Australia.

73 Maniac – Michael Sembello
Three eighties pop classics to finish this batch. Like most people I knew this song from the movie 'Flashdance' and I loved it from the first time I heard it. If I am doing an 80s disco i always play this!! A worldwide hit but it just missed the top 40 here, I feel if it had got that TOTP play it would have been a top 10 hit here as well. Anyway US #1 and just #43 here.

72 Total Eclipse of the Heart – Bonnie Tyler
Well what can you say about this. One of the biggest power ballads ever. It probably should be higher but it has been so overplayed over the years this is the best I could do. Another worldwide hit, it was a US and UK number one.

71 Union Of The Snake - Duran Duran
First of two appearances for Duran Duran in 1983. Not their best single but still one of their better ones. This reached #3 in UK and US.

70 Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life – Indeep
Ok just one more let's go to one of the best dance records of the 80s. This is another great secret weapon for 80s discos. A lot of people have forgotten it but as soon as that bass line and vocal kicks in, the dancefloor just goes mad. Its also very long so great for pee breaks hehe. It reached #13 in the Uk and #103 in US.

Really like the Joorney track - don't recall it at all.
Like EarlP would have had Eclipse much higher.

69 Drop The Pilot – Joan Armatrading
Someone who has never really been on my musical radar and not really much since but this one track is so good she gets a high placing for 1983. It was just a brilliant radio record. Shame she never managed to follow the success of this but I guess she was always more of an album artist. It reached #11 in the UK and even charted in US reaching #78. It still gives me chills, I love it when songs do that.

68 Speak Like A Child – The Style Council
For most of their existence 'Long Hot Summer' was my favourite Style Council song but recently I think it is now this. Again its another brilliant radio record. It reached #4 in the UK.

67 Flashdance...What a Feeling – Irene Cara
Just a few places back we had 'Maniac' now we have the main theme from 'Flashdance'. Definitely Irene Cara's best song great feel good pop. A worldwide smash it was a US #1 and Uk #2. In the old MW days I did actually think she sung 'Take your pants off and make it happen' hehe

66 Cuts Like A Knife – Bryan Adams
Only Bryan Adams song to make the top 100 such is the strength of 1983, 'Straight From The Heart' was #102 if you are interested. A US only hit reaching #15

65 Talking in Your Sleep – The Romantics
Another band I discovered through yahoo Music in the early 00s, the song was very familiar and thats because Bucks Fizz had a hit with it over here. Both very versions are very good. This though was only a hit in Us where it reached #3.
