I mentioned there would be a slight shock in the first chart of the year, and it is the fact that, in spite of it being a chart for 6 January, there is no change at #1 this week. Whilst all the other Christmas songs in the chart have tumbled, we see Prosecco Socialist hold their position on top for at least one more week.
Although Ray Davies held the top position on the chart of 9th January 2010 with "Postcard From London", that song mentioned Christmas in the lyrics but not in the title and wasn't really totally a Christmas song. In some ways the current #1 is also not so much about Christmas but about people who cannot stay in relationships, but clearly has a lot of Christmas references in it, including the title. In any case it is showing its worthiness as a #1 and I'll see how I rank it among my Christmas songs in the future, but I think this has comparisons with Fairytale Of New York. (Well obviously in its lyrical theme of bad relationships).
The second highest new entry this week is by Eminem with Beyonce. Feels strange that Eminem had his first UK hit about 19 years ago and Beyonce one year earlier as part of Destiny's Child. That makes them about as modern as Cliff Richard was to the chart when I started compiling. On my chart Eminem's great chart success was happening 17 years ago. However he's mostly failed to make any impact at all. Aside from the enormous smash "Stan" and the latest entry, his only other chart appearance was in 2004 when D12 reached #15 with "My Band".
