March 11-March 17 1990
Depeche Mode spend a second week at number 1 fending off competition from Michael Bolton and They Might Be Giants. The highest new entry comes in the form of Clint Boon's Inspiral Carpets which is probably my second favorite song by them behind Saturn 5. The Cult are up 7 places and Blue Savannah by Erasure up 6 places making them the biggest movers in my top 20. Let It Be got a re-release as part of the "It Was Twenty Years Ago" series and as I made the choice to chart re-releases it sits nicely in the middle of the pack

March 18-March 24 1990Depeche Mode stay at number 1 for a 3rd week making it the longest reign at number 1 so far, not much movement in the top 20 with only All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You by Heart sneaking it at #19. The song tells a horrifying tale about a hitchhiker who has his eyeballs stolen by an attractive female after being picked up in the rain and making love in a hotel. After years of painful rehabilitation and regaining his eyesight through the wonders of medical science, he comes around a corner one day and bumps into the same woman who happens to be wearing his eyeballs as earrings. She apologizes to him and pleads for his understanding, explaining that their encounter was purely for the purpose of taking "one little thing", his eyeballs. Storytelling at its best, unlike todays music. I imagine TheThorne was a big Heart fan back in the day 1. (1.) Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence2. (3.) They Might Be Giants - Birdhouse In Your Soul 3. (2.) Michael Bolton - How Am I Supposed to Live Without You 4. (6.) Aerosmith - Dude (Look Like A Lady) 5. (9.) The Cult - Sweet Soul Sister 6. (7.) Alannah Myles - Black Velvet 7. (10.) April 8-April 14 1990
Only 4 new entries this week which gives other songs a chance to rise a rise, Madonna enters the top 10 with Vogue and Birdhouse In Your Soul by They Might Be Giants spends a second week at number 1, such a brilliant song. Ride are the lowest new entrants, they were pioneers of what became Britpop really along with Stone Roses, you will see Andy Bell, vocals, lead guitar, keyboards in Ride later on in my chart with bands like Hurricane #1 and Oasis

April 15-April 21 1990
Another week of average new releases really, April was a slow month!, Soundgarden are the highest new entry with Hands All Over at #29, but the lack of new entries gives the cheesy popastic Hitchin A Ride by Sinitta a chance to chart. The Cult edge to number one with Sweet Soul Sister, I love the Cult but most of there great songs were in the 80's o this might be the only time we see them top my chart. Madonna has edged into my top 5 and Kim Wilde is the biggest mover up 9 places

April 29-May 5 1990
Vogue spends a second week at the number 1 spot with not a lot challenging it for the top spot with most of the of the top 5 peaking at probably there highest point now. November Spawned A Monster is the highest new entry from former Smiths front man Morrissey, Fleetwood Mac have a new entry at #26 with Save Me but it is Russian rock band Gorky Park that is my find of this week with "Try To Find Me", it reached number 81 in the Billboard Hot 100, spending two weeks in the chart making the band the first Russian act ever to enter the Hot 100, it never charted in the uk , infact a few new entries this week didn't chart in the uk including the excellent Michael Penn and if I'm not mistaken Alice Cooper too and Power To Love by The Cross peaked in the uk at #83

Daz do you check out Gezza top 10 of 1990 thread. It's not just that we cover the whole top 100 and beyond, you might pick up some gems that you may miss.
A lot of great stuff made the indie top 10 but still missed the top 100!

Will have to check that out, I'm quite happy with the quality up to now, quite a varied mix, but I'm always open to hearing a hidden gem, if you see me approaching a month and there's a song you think I might like released that month, feel free to point me in the right direction, like I've said before I was 7 so everything is retrospectively looking back so I have no point of reference until really the mid/later 90's

I will have a look just I feel you must be missing stuff. For one really surprised you haven't charted The Shamen. Progen or Move Any Mountain as it's better known is one of the best songs of the year imo.

I came across The Shamen. Not a fan at all, just goes over my head, must have been a you had to be there kinda band to appreciate them, I imagine it was like nothing around at the time but I just can't get into them.
*update* I did catch Pro>Gen and had a listen but it didn't strike me as anything top 40 worthy on first listen, it might do something next time round after a few repeat plays when it peaks at #4 in 1991 but The Shamen are generally my Motown, Ebeneezer Goode would win the cheese fest round comfortably and in the past rates I have given it 2 out of 10

Also I did go out a lot in 1990 so anything you can dance to especially indie dance was huge for me. This is all the songs I charted I 1990 some are missing from Spotify though

May 13-May 19 1990
Michael Bolton gets his number 1 with "How Can We Be Lovers", its the perfect ballad and a regular on my playlists. Talk Talk - It's My Life makes an appearance as my highest new entry, it was originally released in 1984 and charted at #46, re-released in in 1985 but only got to #93 but it really wasn't a hit until 1990 where it got to #13 in the chart

Shhh. Don't say that too loudly.
He released some really good songs in the early 90s. He was about the only one doing the soft rock/power balad crossover stuff in the early 90s when the charts were flooded with pop, rap and eurodance. I will have to look to see where I charted him in my best of 1990's

Not all of Michael Bolton's songs are bad. In particular he wrote "I Found Someone" which was a hit for Cher in 1988.
I'm allowed spoilers in this topic I guess so I'll just say that "Love Is A Wonderful Thing" was quite a big hit in my chart in 1991. He got sued for that one by the Isley Brothers. They also did a song of that title but there is very little overlap between the two. Just a bit of the title, at one point, is sung with the same rhythm and similar melody. Other than that they are completely different songs.
Had Michael Bolton and the co-writer admitted just to that small bit having copied it and settled out of court it would have saved them both a lot of money and stress. I'd award 10% to the Isleys maximum.
