91 So Alive – Love and Rockets
All these past songs were big hits in my chart at the time but this one passed me by, I maybe thought it was an old song, really not sure why as Atlantic 252 must have playlisted it. A song really 5 years out of time, I think that's why it was maybe overlooked in the UK at the time as we had really moved on from this kinda of new wave which could easily have been Billy Idol or Psychedelic Furs. the UK wasn't interested in their own band but it was a huge hit in this US reaching #3 and a Canadian Number one. A miserable #79 here.

90 Find Out Why – Inspiral Carpets
In this batch so far most of these bands seemed to be looking back or not really the future of pop music. Inspiral Carpets were the future, yes they revived sounds from the 60s but they were very much the sound of the 90s and very exciting band. When I first heard Inspiral Carpets you just could not ignore them. This was their first top 100 single and reached #90 in the UK.

89 I Feel the Earth Move – Martika
1989 and we have another pop princess, must admit I have always like Martika she never put out a bad single. this Carole King cover was the followup to her worldwide hit 'Toy Soldiers', it really is a top notch cover and reached #25 in the US and #7 in the UK.

88 The Sun Rising – The Beloved
Now we really are there, the most modern sounding track so far. Balearic was a huge sound in Ibiza at the time, a kind of chillout dance sound and The Beloved were one of the biggest acts in this genre, they would eventually become more of a dance pop act but this is just pure class. This was their first hit and reached #26.

87 Come Home - James
Up until now James have been a very underrated and cult indie band, this all changed when they decided they would get on the Madchester bandwagon with this superb Flood remix of early single 'Come Home'. There is and even better Andy Weatherall version which the clubs played that I loved as well. Sounds a lot fresher still than James from this era, i really struggle with playing 'Sit Down' these days. Slight error as this is the original mix that came out in 1989 oops, we will have to wait a year for this version which woudl peak at #32 in 1990 and by then they would be my favourite band.

86 Mystify – INXS
As I was falling in love with new bands and new sounds, I was starting to fall out of love with bands I liked previous but in 1989 we have yet another single from 'Kick'. they are properly successful in the Uk now and this single reached #14 in the UK. Think we will have something brand new from them soon.

85 Love Train – Holly Johnson
Holly Johnsons solo output should really be filed under off its time. I can not even bare to listen to 'Americanos' now but I have to admit I really loved this song at the time and so did teh public it was a big #4 hit in the UK but now does anyone actually listen to this?

84 You're History – Shakespears Sister
More pop rock and an act that none of us ever saw coming. Dave Stewart puts together a new duo with Siobhan from Bananarama and a new singer Marcella Detroit. It was way better than any of us expected, and Siobhan went a bit goth it took some getting used to. It reached #7 in the UK.

83 Cherish - Madonna
She has been away for an age but Madonna finally returns in 1989 with arguably her best album. Showing all these young poplets how it is done. We have of course another track from this album to come but first we have the pure bubblegum cuteness of 'Cherish', which ranks in my top 5 Madonna songs of all time. So much I even used it in Pop factor. Also she is very cute in the video which helps, my shortlived first girlfriend at the time looked just like her in this video....no tail mind you...we even played it when we were together. This reached #2 in the Us and #3 in the UK.

82 Getting Away With It - Electronic
First single from a new project let by Bernard Sumner, a supergroup of sorts as it features Johnny Marr and on this single Neil Tennat as well. Three of the best men in alt pop together on one single how could it fail. This was never off the radio when I started Uni and it reached #12 in the UK.

81 Hallelujah - Happy Mondays
While I was away in Skye this summer some was happening to pop music, I discovered The Stone Roses over that summer but The Mondays would hit me when I started University. Again so much energy and totally different to anything else, can't believe such an exciting music scene was kicking off just when I move to a big city. I still really love this as its not so overplayed as 'Step On' its just so anarchic. This brilliant EP did not chart but was an Indie chart number one.

80 Wages Day – Deacon Blue
1989 was a definitely a big year of change, Deacon Blue were still one of the biggest live bands in the UK but there was a feeling already that they could soon be seen as old fashioned and uncool, in the space of two years!! This second single from 'When The World Knows Your Name' reached #18 in the UK.

79 All The Myths On Sunday - Diesel Park West
Possibly their defining song, its a rather good rock track and very REM, just they are too early. The song is still topical talking about fake news in the Sunday papers somethings don't change. It was their first top 75 hit reaching #66.

78 Looking for Linda – Hue and Cry
Out of the great songs Hue & Cry wrote this is the one I still here on the radio. I really wasn't that sure about it at the time but now I am old enough to get the song, I was maybe too young to get it at the time. Also the name Linda annoyed me don't know why. I never saw the video which might have helped as Linda is quite cute. This was their 2nd biggest hit and reached #15.

77 The Living Years - Mike & The Mechanics
This was another odd one. I absolutely loved Mike & The Mechanics and I already had the album but this wasn't a song I really liked off it. Again its a case of being too old to relate I guess but I grew to appreciate what a brilliant song this was. Even more amazingly it was taking off in the charts and became a Worldwide number one. I actually thought it was a UK number one as well maybe it was just on The Chart Show, it peaked at #2 here.

76 Belfast Child - Simple Minds
Another song I wasn't sure about at the time was this. It was beautiful but erm it wasn't my Simple Minds. I guess big meaningful ballads were really a thing in 1989. I recently saw Simple Minds live and they did this and it was amazing though. This did get to number one here, it was their one and only number one in the UK.

75 She Drives Me Crazy – Fine Young Cannibals
Enough of these sad songs, here is the brilliant return of Fine Young Cannibals. They were one of those bands that I was always aware of but this was just another level just a perfect pop song. It was a Us number one, they still really loved new wave this time with a bit of a modern twist, and reached #5 in the UK.

74 The Beat(en) Generation – The The
Back to meaningful songs and the first song I ever bought by The The, such a political song but so catchy and featuring Johnny Marr what could go wrong. My flatmate next year was a huge The The fan and they were pretty much the soundtrack of my life for 2 years. This was their biggest hit up to this point and reached #18 in the UK.

73 Never – The House of Love
Not much more to say about this more great indie rock from The House Of Love. This was first of two of their songs to peak at #41 in 1989 so frustrating. www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F9cZazdv1w

72 When I'm With You – Sheriff
This is a really odd one. In 1989 I though this kind of rock music was starting to die off a bit and this massive power ballad shot up the charts in the US really out of nowhere who were these guys?? It turns out it was an old song from 1982 which flopped in the US and a DJ just started playing it on US radio in 1989 and it just exploded and went all the way to number one in the US. By now the band had split and formed a rather good band called Alias. By the way think I might have featured this in 1982 deja vu strikes sorry.
