Delighted Spain got punished twice for their dirty defending. Shame it was CR who gets the credit, but there is no denying his talent. One of Diego Costa's goals should have been disallowed for a foul in the build up, so Spain might consider themselves lucky to get away with that.
Both teams should sweep through to the QFs at worst, and maybe the SFs.
Uruguay looked reasonable; Morocco, Iran and Egypt all wasting everybody's time at this tournament.

Two penalties awarded through VAR. One scored, one blazed over the bar. France did just enough against Australia. Peru played well against Denmark in their first World Cup finals match in 36 years but came away with nothing. Ronaldo 3, Messi 0. Lionel's questionable record in major tournaments continues (the fact he was voted best player at the last World Cup was sheer BS) as a sub-standard performance is capped by his second half penalty being saved. Iceland's football fairytale continues as they give themselves a real chance of reaching the knockout stages. An own goal and a penalty was enough for Croatia to go top of the group against Nigeria, who were absolutely shocking. This is the second successive World Cup in which the first goal scored for Croatia has been an own goal.

The commentators mentioned we all love the underdog in the Iceland game, not when they park the bus and are just really really boring I don't, give me Peru any day who played some lovely attacking football.

Once again the holders lose their opening game. This is the 5th time going back to 1982, when Argentina lost theirs and also did the same in 1990 although both times they qualified from their group. France lost in 2002 and Spain in 2014 and neither qualified from the group.
Italy drew their first game in 2010 and failed to qualify from the group.
Brazil won their opening game in 1966 but failed to qualify from their group.
Brazil (1974), Germany (1978) and Italy (1986) drew their opening game but did get through their group.
That leaves England (1970), Germany (1994), Brazil (1998 and again in 2006) as holders who won their opening game and also made it through their group since 1966.

Serbia are off to a winning start thanks to Aleksandr Kolarov's stunning free kick. Brazil took an early lead with a magnificent strike from Coutinho but Switzerland battled their way back into the game and equalised early in the second half. A brilliant Mexican performance sees the world champions suffer defeat in their opening game. It's the first time since 1986 the Germans have failed to win their first game. Mexico get off to a great start as they look to reach the knockout stages for the seventh World Cup in a row. However, they've never won a World Cup knockout game outside their own country.

It's the lucky Mexico shirt I bought and am wearing that gave them the edge over the Germans! All the faves not doing so well, good job England aren't a favourite, so we should be okay tomorrow (hopefully)

Pretty pleased to see some good showings by underdogs so far. Good for Iceland and Mexico. Disappointed that Portugal didn’t win.
So CR sets a new record as the oldest hat-trick hero at the finals.

That was a game of two halves, we were outstanding 1st half, but we need to take our chances, so creative, and apart from two dodgy ref decisions, should have been winning comfortably. 2nd half we were like the England of old, so slow and ponderous, but good olde Harry popped up and got the winner, and that's all that matters for now!

The commentator said it was only the 3rd time we have won our opening game. I make it the 5th time.
1970 1-0 vs Romania 1982 3-1 vs France 1998 2-0 vs Tunisia 2006 1-0 vs Paraguay 2018 2-1 vs Tunisia

FACT: Harry Kane has more World Cup goals after one game than Wayne Rooney after eleven.

The existence of VAR makes it much harder to understand how England didn't get at least one penalty.

Last time England scored than one goal in a game was our 2-2 draw against Sweden in 2006.
Since then:
England 1-0 Ecuador (2006) England 0-0 Portugal (2006) England 1-1 USA (2010) England 0-0 Algeria (2010) England 1-0 Slovenia (2010) England 1-4 Germany (2010) England 1-2 Italy (2014) England 1-2 Uruguay (2014) England 0-0 Costa Rica (2014)
so the first time in 10 games..
Of course we did really score 2 against Germany in 2010.
