We've had the Fake FA Cup, now it's time for the Fake World Cup!
It will run for the duration of the actual tournament but will be a straight knockout. It features all 211 FIFA members plus a number of non-FIFA teams.
The matches will be played using a similar system to the one I used in the World Cup thread whereby the score is determined by the most recent meeting between the teams. If there has been no previous meeting, rankings are used. In the event of a draw, rankings are used to determine the penalty shoot-out winner unless the two teams have previously contested a shoot-out with each other.
The top 19 teams according to the Elo Ratings have received a bye to Round 2. Everyone else is starting in Round 1. The draw will appear tonight, with results over the weekend.

One tie between two Real world cup teams already, Sweden v Saudi Arabia - both teams who have contested the Unofficial Football World Championship already this month.

1st round results: Where teams have had no previous meetings, Elo world rankings are used to determine the result and margin of victory. Margin of victory = 1 goal for every places within the top 75, then 1 goal for every 10 places outside the top 75.

Djibouti doomed. I’m confident against Oman.
(Not that I have the slightest idea what is going on, but I’m enjoying it anyway)

Argentina out. How apt. But also Sweden and Australia.

A draw!! Now the battle is here - my home vs current domiciling nation! That’s certainly a flip of a coin. A French off between France vs DRC. How exciting.

Well that took the wind from my sails. Looking at the draw now, some of them have better had their third Weetabix to get through (Burkina Faso, Trinidad, England).

I recommend loading this page on a train with dodgy WiFi - the teams load one by one, every few seconds, so it's like watching a real draw!

Nearly all of the 32 remaining teams have been to a world cup in my memory (i.e. since 1994), with the exceptions being Burkina Faso, Montenegro (unless you count S&M getting well beaten in 2006), Zambia, and Venezuela.
