HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 8th JUNE 1986
The Pet Shop Boys achieve what no other act has in four years on the Retro Chart with their first three singles all hitting number one.
Their third single follows up the hugely successful West End Girls, which is now the biggest debut song we’ve ever had on the Retro-Chart, and Love Comes Quickly, which spent just a single week at number one in March.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood previously came closest to achieving this feat in 1984. Relax and Two Tribes were both big number one singles that year, the 2nd and 4th biggest songs of 1984. However The Power Of Love could only manage to reach number 3 in the Christmas chart of the year. With just one further Top Ten single after that, things have been quiet recently for Frankie.
Next up to take a run at ‘The Triple’ were A-Ha. Their debut single, Take On Me, ended up as our biggest song of 1985, and the follow-up, The Sun Always Shines On TV was also a big number one. Unfortunately the hat-trick was to elude them when Train Of Thought ran out of steam at number 8 just a couple of months ago. Their latest single, the title track from their debut album Hunting High And Low is a new entry on the chart this week, will this get them back on track at the top of the charts?
The only other song that ever came close to catching the Pet Shop Boys this week was I Can’t Wait by Nu Shooz, but instead has to be content with the runner-up spot.
Peter Gabriel’s reign at the top of the chart is over after a long four week residency there. Sledgehammer is just one of five songs that have scored over 1,000 points this year so far.
The Smiths have another big hit on their hands as Bigmouth Strikes Again moves up to number four, the first time they’ve been in the Top Five since How Soon Is Now reached number two in February 1985.
The Housemartins complete the Top Five with a big fifteen place jump with Happy Hour, which lands at number five.
Highest new entry this week is from Owen Paul with My Favourite Waste Of Time, straight in at number 20.
Biggest climb comes from Amazulu as Too Good To Be Forgotten moves up 16 places to number 16.
And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full….
