Generally a good 1st round for the Brits at the US Open. Some impressive performances but some disappointment too.
Mens
Cam Norrie - A strange but unfortunately expected match from a volatile from Benoit Paire. Cam won 6-0 7-6 (7-1) 6-0 but mainly because his opponent couldn't be bothered putting in the effort for the 1st and 3rd set. He next plays Joao Sousa (ranked 59th) and has a poor recent Grand Slam record - only playing in the 2nd round for the 2nd time in the last 3 years. Should be a comfortable victory for Cam
Andy Murray - Impressive performance by Andy to beat 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo 7-5 6-3 6-3 - who I've found is ranked high because of his clay court performances. He next faces American wildcard Emilio Nava in the 2nd round, who produced a shock in beating John Milman whose ranked 100 places above him.
Dan Evans - Comfortable 3 set win against Jiri Vesely 6-4 6-1 6-1. He next faces James Duckworth (who was Andy's 1st round opponent at Wimbledon) in the 2nd round.
Kyle Edmund - As expected, a tough opener against Casper Ruud as he lost in straight sets 3-6 5-7 2-6. There were some signs of his quality early on in the match, including a break of serve early in the 1st set but lack of match fitness after 2 years took its toll and comfortably lost.
Jack Draper - Dominant performance from Jack winning against Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4 6-3 6-3. He does face Felix AA in the 2nd round which will be interesting to follow - along with Serena's match which is being played at roughly the same time in the night session on Wednesday. Womens Emma Raducanu - Not to be for Emma as she loses to the experienced Alize Cornet in straight sets 3-6 3-6 and the defence of her US Open title ends on the first hurdle. She didn't play badly but too many unforced errors and some clever drop shot play from Alize took its toll. She will tumble down the rankings to around 70-80 but still be within the top 100. Given her tough start on the WTA tour, the result should be a good thing for her as the pressure to perform should ease and the spotlight on her should fade slightly - particularly if we get a new USO womens singles winner.
Harriet Dart - Harriet won her match against the in-form Russian Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (10-8) 1-6 6-3 in one of the shocks of the first round. Not one play could hold their serve comfortably in a scrappy match but after a blip in the 2nd set and was a break down in the 3rd. She showed gutsy determination to win against a top 10 opponent for the 1st time in her career. She next faces Hungarian Dalma Galfi - whose ranked close to where Harriet is now. Could be a close match.

If Harriet Dart were to win tonight she will become the new British #1!
I'm biting my tongue - no comment on Emma Raducanu.

Round 2 results
Mens Cam Norrie - A comfortable win for Cam against Joao Sousa winning 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-4), despite him not playing at his best as seen in the scoreline. He next plays the Danish teenager 28th seed Holger Rune who had been given a walkover to the 3rd round after John Isner withdrew due to injury. He will provide a much sterner test in the 3rd round and could be a tricky match. Andy Murray - A gutsy and determined performance from Andy winning against wildcard Emilio Nava 5-7 6-3 6-1 6-0. The first set was a marathon set lasting almost 1hr 30mins with some stunning tennis at times. Unfortunately the contrast in fitness level (and experience) showed and Nava's 5 setter match in his 1st round began to take its toll later on in the match. A name to look out for in the future. Murray's next opponent is 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the 3rd round.
Dan Evans - Another gutsy performance against James Duckworth winning 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4. After a dominant first 2 sets, momentum switched to James after the 3rd set and was even a break up in the 4th before Dan clawed back the break to win in 4 sets. Dan's next opponent will be former champion Marian Cilic in the 3rd round.
Jack Draper - A stunning and impressive victory for Jack winning against 6th seed Felix AA 6-4 6-4 6-4 and to claim his biggest scalp on a grand slam stage. He did get help from a lot of unforced errors from Felix but nonetheless still an impressive performance. His next opponent will be the Russian 27th seed Karen Khachanov in the 3rd round and a winnable match if he's on form.
With 4 British men through to the 3rd round, this is only the 2nd time it has happened after Wimbledon in 1997 where Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski, Mark Petchey and Andrew Richardson made it through to the 3rd round then.
WomensHarriet Dart - What I thought was going to be a close match turned out it wasn't, as Hungarian Dalma Galfi comfortably beat Harriet 6-4 6-0 and had no answers to her powerful groundstrokes. As rubcale says, she missed out on becoming British #1 but there's still some decent points from her 1st round win.
Very quickly on the doubles - there will be no British representation in the women's doubles as Harriet Dart (with her partner Liudmila Samsonova) and the British pairing of Olivia Nichols and Lissey Barnett (fresh from winning their first WTA title together and must have been a replacement for another doubles pairing) lost their respective first round matches.
On the mens doubles - Ram/Salisbury (seeded #1), J Murray/Soares (seeded #10), Glasspool/Heliovaara (seeded #11) and Skupski/Koolhof (seeded #2) are through to round 2 with their respective straight sets victory. No such luck for Jonny O'Mara / Fabrice Martin who lost their 1st round match.

Round 3 results
Cam Norrie - Another comfortable win for Cam against Holger Rune winning 7-5 6-4 6-1 and takes him through to the 2nd week of a slam for the 2nd time. There was some drama (or more like a teenage strop) caused by Rune who accused Cam of taking too long on his serve by aborting his serve on a number of occasions and complained to the umpire. Nevertheless an impressive performance by Cam getting through the 1st week not dropping a set and next faces 9th seed Russian Andrey Rublev.
Andy Murray - Lost to Matteo Berrettini 6-4 6-4 6-7 (1-7) 6-3 with Murray's first serve badly letting him down in the match. With this run, he should be close to the top 40 after the tournament.
Dan Evans - Lost a marathon match against former champ Marian Cilic after losing 7-6 (13-11) 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 7-5 in a 4 hour match. From what I read, a close fought first 2 sets but then Cilic power and experience at Grand Slams was the key factor.
Jack Draper - Sadly retired in the match due to a hamstring injury with the scores ending at 6-3 4-6 6-5 against Russian Karen Khachanov. There were encouraging signs he would repeat his stunning win against Felix AA but the number of matches he's played prior to the USO eventually caught up with him. Really hope to see him in the upcoming Davis Cup bought as a spare.

Round 4 results
Cam Norrie - Not to be for Cam as he lost in straight sets to Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-4 6-4 with some sloppy play. To be fair, Rublev was dominant and showed why he was 9th seed. Still some good points earned for Cam and should be close to the top 5 when the rankings come out next week.
After Medvedev and Nadal's losses in the 4th round, we're guaranteed a 1st time Grand Slam champion in the men's single.
Still some Brits in action in the men's doubles as Joe Salisbury/Rajeev Ram are in the semis and could play Lloyd Glasspool/Harri Heliovaara if they win their respective quarter final. Neal Skupski/Wesley Koolhof qualify for the other semi - which nicely coincides with Neal's call up to the Davis Cup squad as the 5th player next week.

Carlos Alcaraz becomes the new #1 player at the age of 19 after winning his 1st title against Casper Ruud, who becomes world #2.
Iga Swiatek wins her 3rd grand slam title against Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur - her first Grand Slam outside of the French Open.
There were Brits on either side of the men's doubles final, which was played a day after the Queen's death. Joe Salisbury/Rajeev Ram retained the US Open title against Neal Skupski / Wesley Koolhof.
Brit rankings after the US Open
- Cam Norrie - #8
- Dan Evans - #25
- Andy Murray - #43
- Jack Draper - #47
- Emma Raducanu - #83
- Harriet Dart - #85
- Katie Boulter - #137
- Heather Watson - #146

After 24 years of competitive play, Roger Federer has announced his retirement after his appearance in the Laver Cup next week.
Had the pleasure of watching one of his final competitive matches at the ATP Finals at the O2 in person in 2019 prior to the pandemic and I'm glad I did. Elegance and grace both on and off the court.

Not sure what's going on with Norrie lately - lots of slow starts, too many errors especially on the forehand and didn't like the slow heavy conditions in Glasgow.
Shame GB lost out on going to the finals on the crucial doubles matches against USA and Netherlands. Against USA was unlucky and Netherlands were too good despite the scoreline. I'm surprised Neal Skupski didn't play against Netherlands against his regular partner and Skupski/Salisbury looked solid playing with each other against Kazakhstan.

Great Britain have reached the semi final of the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly called Fed Cup) for the first time since 1981 after pulling a huge upset against Spain winning the tie 3-0.
Coming into the tournament as heavy underdogs - GB were playing without Emma Raducanu. The team of Harriet Dart (the only singles players in the top 100), Heather Watson, Katie Boulter and the doubles team of Olivia Nicholls and Alicia Barnett (making their debuts) beat the odds to come out on top of their group to qualify. The other teams being Kazakhstan (includes the Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina) and Spain (includes Paula Badosa, formerly a world #2)
After losing against Kazakhstan 2-1 on Tuesday, Kazakhstan needed an overall win against Spain to progress. However GB were gifted a slim lifeline after Spain won their tie 3-0, meaning GB had to win 3-0 against Spain to progress - i.e. 4 matches won.
They now next play Australia on Saturday, which ironically was their opponent in 1981 when GB were last in the semi final, where Sue Barker and Virginia Wade won their singles matches and winning the tie 2-1.

Against Kazakhstan, a tough ask for Harriet Dart against Elena Rybakina. She didn't really have an answer to deal with Rybakina's serve and groundstrokes. Katie Boulter played Yulia Putintseva in the other singles match, which went to 3 sets and Katie had her chances but faded towards the end.
Barnett and Nicholls excelled in their BJK debut doubles match - albeit a dead rubber winning in straight sets.
Against Spain, it was Heather Watson who played the first match against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, who was ranked 60 odd places above. A ruthless performance beating her 6-0 6-2 and was refreshing not seeing her make so many of her characteristic errors.
Dart played against #13 Badosa but clearly feeding off Heather's victory. A comfortable win in the end winning 6-3 6-4.
Barnett and Nicholls again showed why they were in the team and winning their 2nd BJK Cup match 7-6 6-2 against the Spanish pairing.
Like most people, I watched this with low expectations but just to see a tennis team competition and see how GB fared. I've been particularly been impressed with the doubles team of Nicholls/Barnett. Reminds me a bit of the Brian brothers and the energy they have between them. It's clear they've been relishing the WTA tour and look far better than they did at Wimbledon.
Emma Raducanu's injury is a bit of a blessing really. I'm sure if Emma played, Dart/Watson would have played doubles and who knows what may have happened. A nice problem to have for Anne Keothavong to determine whether to have a specialised doubles team for future selections.

So close for Team GB as they lose to Australia 2-1 in the semi final of the BJK cup, losing the final doubles match on the final set match tie break 10-6.
Heather Watson lost to Storm Sanders in the first match in a fairly tight contest before Harriet Dart beat highest seed Ajla Tomljanovic in the 2nd match comprehensively in straight sets. The deciding doubles match of Lissy Barnett / Liv Nicholls vs. Storm Sanders / Sam Stosur could have gone either way with the 2 previous sets being decided on tie-breaks before Australia showed their quality to win the tie-break.
GB will need to go through qualification in April next year, having only qualified as hosts this time, to play again at this stage of the competition - the draw happening tomorrow. As said before, I'm expecting a much changed team with Emma Raducanu, Katie Swan and perhaps Jodie Burridge fighting for a place.

Emma Raducanu is out of this year's French Open and Wimbledon after minor surgery done on her hand and ankle. Needless to say she has been struggling to string up a few results together since her 1st round exit in the US Open last year and has withdrawn from tournaments a few times this season
She's aiming to comeback during the US hard court season, where she will tumble down likely outside the top 200 and will need to go through qualification to play in the USO. Jodie Burrage will be the new British #1.
This probably is a blessing in disguise for Emma, as I don't think she been having the best of times with media bashing her and fulfilling commitments to sponsors, and a break would do her some good just to get out of the limelight she's had since her triumph. She'll be back on the ITF circuit where hopefully she can gain back some confidence and organically climb the rankings once again.

Andy Murray's slim chance of a seed at Wimbledon are all but gone after his first round defeat at Queens against Alex De Minaur and ends a 10-match winning streak after wins at Surbiton and Nottingham. He's guaranteed to be playing a higher ranked player in his first 2 rounds.
With the new British #1 Katie Boulter winning her 1st WTA title against Jodie Burrage in an historic all-Brit final in Nottingham, this propels her back into the top 100 but will be too late for automatic qualification to Wimbledon. She (along with the other British women) will have to rely on wildcards or go through 3 rounds of qualifications to play at Wimbledon, which start next week.
I'm pretty certain Katie will get a wildcard, as she does have points to defend at Eastbourne after her magic run last year.

Along with Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Cam Norrie who qualify automatically in the singles draw based on their ranking. The following have been given wildcards into Wimbledon. Unfortunately no Brits came through qualifying this week.

Mens
- Andy Murray (WR #40) vs. Ryan Peniston (WR #268)
In terms of a GBR perspective, one of the highlights in Round 1 where not only we're guaranteed a Brit in the 2nd round but one where Andy will have to contend with a neutral crowd at Wimbledon. Murray will be thrilled not to be playing a seed in the 1st round but plays Ryan Peniston, who made the 2nd round in 2022 but will have a hard time against Andy to replicate that again.
A tough 2nd round beckons for either player - with Stefanos Tsitsipas or Dominic Thiem, who's on the road to recovery after his injury.
- Cam Norrie (WR #13 Seeded 12) vs. Tomas Machac (Qualifier WR #108)
Should be a fairly routine win for Cam against his 22 year old Czech opponent, who came through qualifying and makes his debut at Wimbledon. Cam made the Semi-Finals last year at Wimbledon but faces a tricky path to replicate with Seb Korda in the 3rd round and Tsitsipas in the 4th round.
- Dan Evans (WR #30 Seeded 27) vs. Quentin Halys (WR #79)
Anything could happen here depending on if Dan wants it. On paper he should win it but does seem to struggle somewhat at Wimbledon with expectations and the home crowd. A similar ranked player in the 2nd round should Dan win.
- George Loffhagen (WR #371) vs. Holger Rune (WR #6 Seeded 6)
George will do well to get a set off the Danish 20 year old young gun but some good experience should be gained in his first Grand Slam outing
- Arthur Fery (WR #391) vs. Daniil Medvedev (WR #3 Seeded 3)
Similar situation to George. He'll do well to get a set from the former US Open champion but this is Medvedev first match in 2 years at Wimbledon after the Russian ban last year. It's not Arthur's first time playing at Wimbledon, as he played in mens doubles last year reaching the 2nd round.
- Liam Broady (WR #142) vs. Constant Lestienne (WR #74)
Potentially a winnable match for Liam against an opponent with a sparse record in Grand Slam appearances and looks to be making his debut at Wimbledon at the age of 31. I can see this match going to 5 sets, which Liam has quite the record for.
- Jan Choinski (WR #164) vs. Dusan Lajovic (WR #56)
Nice for the Wimbledon committee to reward Jan with a wildcard after career high ranking performance this year. I know he's been around the challenger circuit for a while but he makes his Wimbledon debut against a player who's very experienced on the tour. Jan is a tall fella so the grass will suit his game and could be winnable game if he overcomes the nerves.
Womens
- Harriet Dart (WR #135) vs. Diane Parry (WR #96)
Equal match on paper but French woman Parry slightly the favourite here after a 3rd round appearance last year.
- Katie Swan (WR #147) vs. Belinda Bencic (WR #14 seeded 14)
Katie hasn't had a stellar Wimbledon journey, only reaching the 2nd round once in her last 5 appearances. I doubt that record will improve after this year, although Bencic's recent record isn't great either - exiting the 1st round at Wimbledon in the last 2 years. Could be an interesting one to watch.
- Jodie Burrage (WR #108) vs. Caty McNally (WR #67)
After her Nottingham final appearance a few weeks ago, Jodie will be coming into Wimbledon with some confidence and form. She will need it against her doubles specialist (usual partner - Coco Gauff) opponent, who appears to be taking a focus on singles this year. Another interesting match to watch and Jodie will fancy her chances.
- Katie Boulter (WR #89) vs. Daria Saville (WR #231)
Despite the ranking difference, this could be a tough match for Katie. Her Australian opponent entering Wimbledon with her protected ranking after being out for 9 months with an ACL injury and recovering from surgery. She only recently returned playing in Birmingham qualifying a couple of weeks ago and playing a few matches since. Reminder that she reached the 3rd round last year and has a good chance of replicating if she wins this match.
- Sonny Kartal (WR #266) vs. Madison Keys (WR #18 seeded 25)
Another tough match for Sonny against the new Eastbourne champion, after making her debut last year. - Heather Watson (WR #144) vs. Barbora Krejcikova (WR #11 seeded 10)
Tough match for Heather against the former French Open champion and Grand Slam doubles winner. That said, Heather will have some confidence after her 4th round appearance last year but Krejcikova has always made the 3rd round at Wimbledon albeit it's only twice.

Day 1
- Liam Broady (WR #142) beat Constant Lestienne (WR #74) 6-3 6-1 7-5
A brilliant performance from Broady who controlled the game from start to finish. He'll next play 4th seed Casper Ruud in the 2nd round and will fancy his chances, as apparently he's allergic to grass and it's not his best surface.
- Jan Choinski (WR #164) beat Dusan Lajovic (WR #56) 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-2
Watched the final 2 sets and Choinski was immense here. Completely dominated his opponent with his serve and power strokes and was a deserved victory.
He next plays 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz, who beat Federer back in 2021.
- Dan Evans (WR #30 Seeded 27) vs. Quentin Halys (WR #79) IN PROGRESS 2-6 3-6
Continues tomorrow but I'm not convinced Dan will pull through, as his opponent looked very comfortable on court. To be honest I gave up watching after 3 games after Evans started his verbal tirade towards his team.
- Harriet Dart (WR #135) lost to Diane Parry (WR #96) 7-6 (7-4) 0-6 4-6
Didn't watch much of this match but appeared to be an inconsistent match played by Dart
- Katie Swan (WR #147) lost to Belinda Bencic (WR #14 seeded 14) 5-7 2-6
Katie had chances in the first set and was even a break up. Bencic showed her experience as the match progressed and made it through comfortably.
- Jodie Burrage (WR #108) beat Caty McNally (WR #67) 6-1 6-4
A comfortable performance and Burrage outplayed her opponent on all fronts. To be fair McNally seemed to be playing with some dodgy strapping to the thigh in the first set and played better in the 2nd however Burrage still proved to be too strong. I didn't watch Nottingham but she does look a better player now than last year.
She next plays 11th seed Russian Daria Kasatkina - who reached the QF in 2018.
Other good matches today was the Coco Gauff vs. Sofia Kenin match - some aggressive and passionate play from both players and Kenin coming out as victor.
Venus Williams vs. Elina Svitolina was a nice match to watch, despite Williams slipping in the 3rd game and requiring a medical time out on an already heavily strapped knee. Svitolina came out on top.

Day 2
Only about an hour was played on the outside courts in the morning today after persistent, sometimes heavy rain poured down in London today meaning only the show courts were in action thanks to the roof.
It means coupled with some matches postponed from last night, the schedule is about a day behind. There's a decent forecast ahead for the rest of the week so it should catch up.
Onto the Brits that were in action: -
- Andy Murray (WR #40) beat Ryan Peniston (WR #268) 6-3 6-0 6-1
Watched by royalty and tennis royalty in the royal box, it was a nervous start from Murray who's serve got broken by Ryan early in the first set but then showed his class against his lesser experienced opponent. Peniston had his chances in the 1st set but struggled as the match went on. Peniston enjoyed his time at centre court and will give him valuable experience and hunger to succeed further
Andy next plays the winner of the Thiem vs. Tsitsipas match, which started today before the rain came, with Thiem currently a 1-0 ahead.
- Cam Norrie (WR #13 Seeded 12) beat Tomas Machac (Qualifier WR #108) 6-3 4-6 6-1 6-4
Played at such a quick pace with a lot of quick points, hard hitting and quick turnaround between points, an expected win for Cam but was made to work for it. Machac struggled with fatigue after winning the 2nd set but it was an entertaining match to watch.
Cam next plays Christopher Eubanks or Thiago Monteiro in the 2nd round
- Dan Evans (WR #30 Seeded 27) lost to Quentin Halys (WR #79) 2-6 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 4-6
Match carried over from last night and moved to Centre Court. Dan showed a lot more positivity and I thought fed off the home crowd's energy. However the deficit proved too much as Halys won in 4.
- Katie Boulter (WR #89) vs. Daria Saville (WR #231) IN PROGRESS 5-6
Quite equally matched so far, both players broke each other's serve and currently on-serve.
- George Loffhagen (WR #371) vs. Holger Rune (WR #6 Seeded 6) IN PROGRESS 6-7 (4-7)
Nothing to report (as I didn't watch it)
