HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 3rd MAY 1987

A bit of a surprise at the top as Johnny Hates Jazz prematurely cut short Starship’s reign at number one.




Shattered Dreams leaps from number seven to take over at number one, despite Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now leading the way for most of the week and still topping four individual charts.

Fleetwood Mac manage to reverse their position as Big Love rebounds from number five to achieve a new peak at number two.

Starship’s points tally had pretty much plateaued as the dip to the tail end of a three horse race this week.

The former number one by Madonna, La Isla Bonita, is down to number four and sharing the honours with the debut single from Wet Wet Wet.

Depeche Mode are back with the lead single from their new album as Strangelove enters at number 20 to become this week’s highest new entry.

Biggest climb is from the Jesus and Mary Chain as April Skies climb 15 places to number 11.

Highest new entry is a great cover version from Carol Hitchcock, courtesy of S/A/W.  I came across this on the same compilation album that Mandy Smith's I Just Can't Wait appeared on, probably in 1988.  Really wish this had been a hit for her, such a great voice and a really striking look.  Not quite at S/A/W saturation yet but even they still had their misses.

The highest new entry is a song co-written by Chris Thompson who was in Manfred Mann's Earth Band and also had a minor hit with Night called "If You Remember Me". He was originally planning to record it himself but later gave it to John Farnham, who had been a member of Little River Band and sang on their 1983 US hit. John Farnham was British-born but lived most of his life in Australia.

The featured track is the 3rd hit by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and this time Full Force are not mentioned at all, but they did still write and produce the track.

It's swap around in the top 2, as Living In A Box edge out Crowded House after just one week on top, and T.Rex get another posthumous remix at 3. I'm not sure that Marc Bolan would have approved of his fan club updates, but it gives the brilliant Get It On more chart points/"sales" for the all-time charts. Zodiac Mindwarp (great name!) leaps up to 6 and is indeed the prime mover inside the 40 in a quiet week. OMD get yet another top 10, 7 years-worth and counting, and Johnny Hates Jazz get a first.

Jesus & Mary Chain go top 20, Elvis gets a Bossa Nova Baby Fun In Acapulco boost from the Tube I think, and Sly & Robbie Boops up to 19. Big jumps into the 40 for Mint Juleps, The Cult & Robbie Nevil, while Carly Simon gets another top 40 new entry, and The Housemartins come over all excited about it. Darn the lower end lots of minor entries for long-running acts & a re-record for Johnny Clegg of his 1983 minor hit.
