HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 21st JUNE 1987
With a sense of inevitability, the Pet Shop Boys storm straight to the top of the Retro-Chart with It’s A Sin.
For only the fourth time in Retro-Chart history we see a song enter at number one. Duran Duran set the precedent for this in 1984 with The Reflex, quickly followed by Band Aid with Do They Know It’s Christmas. We then had to wait just over a couple of years for George and Aretha to repeat this feat with I Knew You Were Waiting, which went straight to the top of the chart in January of this year. And now the Pet Shop Boys have turned the same trick.
So, Neil and Chris continue their remarkable run of number one singles on here. Every song they have released has hit the top of the chart. No other act on the 80s Retro-Chart comes close to matching this 100% strike-rate. The Pet Shop Boys pull ahead of the Eurythmics on the Number One Leaderboard, and are now just two away from joint leaders Duran Duran and Madonna.
It's A Sin is also the first time this year that a song has featured on every single individual chart. Their universal popularity on here means we could be looking at another lengthy residency at the top.
All of this means that U2 spend another frustrated week at number two with I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, which is now unlikely to go any higher.
Heart have been moving steadily up the chart over the last few weeks. Alone is up to number three this week, becoming their biggest hit to date, as it swaps places with When Smokey Sings by ABC.
And what of last week's number one? Whitney fails to become the first act in almost three years to spend five weeks at number one as I Wanna Dance With Somebody sinks all the way to number six.
There’s a huge jump of 24 places for Cliff Richard as My Pretty One ends up at number 16 to become this week’s biggest climber.
And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full….
