Had (the equivalent of) streaming existed then this George Harrison penned track from Abbey Road written in Eric Clapton's garden would have been a huge hit at the turn of the decade. Globally, this track picked up radio airplay in the run up to/the beginning of the new decade due to its lyrics and its futuristic (at the time) production. Famously, John Lennon did not contribute to the track as he thought it was too slight (although he later changed his mind admitting it was "a grower"), and was recovering from a car crash, but he rejected the opportunity to overdub a rhythm guitar and backing harmony vocals.

The Melodians enter at #39 but are more famous for a song they did that was later covered by Boney M. Their version was in 1970 so I wonder if we'll see anyone chart it.
A number of songs that were later covered. Victoria was later covered by The Fall. Two other entries are covers, Badfinger doing a Lennon-McCartney song and Eddie Holman a cover of Ruby & The Romantics 1963 hit.

3rd January 1970
It's straight in at 1 for a track I loved in Singapore days, Edison Lighthouse was pretty much a Tony Macauley song and project fronted by singer Tony Burrows who will be performing a mini-invasion under various group names in early 1970, and the song was originally done by Jefferson. This fab lush pop confection, though, still stands up as a great pop record, albeit instantly sabotaged by Tony Burrows leaving to front his other hitmaking tags, White Plains, Brotherhood Of Man (all 3 famously on the same episode of Top Of The Pops) and later The Pipkins adding to his earlier incarnations as The Ivy League, The Flowerpot Men, and his later fab hit as First Class in 1974. Not that Macauley had much to worry about, he'd already co-written big hits for The Foundations, Marmalade, Long John Baldry, Scott Walker and would go on to co-write endless hits right through to David Soul.
The Delfonics get a 3rd top 10, Tommy James a penultimate top 20, The 5th Dimension add to their total too, and Louis Armstrong gets a 2nd and last. It's 2 new entries from Glen Campbell's new album, Honey Come Back was the Jimmy Webb song that I was mad on that summer - friends of my mum and dad, Irvin & Mary, had the album which I was keen to play when we visited their house on RAF Changi camp, and which was the first album I asked for a present - happily mum and dad couldn't find it and I got the much-better This Is Glen Campbell instead. His version of Both Sides Now was also on the album, and is the first version I knew (my "original" version) so I tend to opt for this one, here in at 21, the 3rd version to chart to date.
The Archies enter at 37 with their fab little rifftastic new TV theme tune, Get On The Line is better than the official single Jingle Jangle, and is the best track on the new album. Jonathan King covers Let It All Hang Out, kickstarting his new career as record label mogul specialising in quirky covers of US or European hits that stiffed in the UK, Chairmen Of The Board debut with the soul classic Give Me Just A Little More Time, which Kylie would one day have a crack at to lesser effect, The Temptations return with another fab funk track that I grew to love following a prominent feature on 80's fab TV show Moonlighting for Psychedelic Shack - star Bruce Willis clearly a big fan as he had a hit cover with the actual Temptations themselves. Finally, the old Frankie Laine huge hit returns in a souped-up version of Answer Me giving The Happenings a second entry, and Barbara Dickson an idea for a future career-starter.

Not that Macauley had much to worry about, he'd already co-written big hits for The Foundations, Marmalade, Long John Baldry, Scott Walker and would go on to co-write endless hits right through to David Soul. John Carter was the original lead singer of The Ivy League but when he left (working in part with Geoff Stephens and sang on Winchester Cathedral). Carter then formed The Flowerpot Men but it was really session musicians and Burrows was brought in to sing lead vocals on the song "Let's Go To San Francisco". As flower-power had come to an end the record label didn't think the name was appropriate anymore and they kind of changed to White Plains. Burrows remained to do lead vocals on the songs recorded in 1969 then left to do other stuff like sing with Edison Lighthouse. Appears he was mostly a session musician singer who performed songs by some of the big songwriters of the time (Carter, Stephens, Macaulay, Cook/Greenaway) but didn't ever really stay around to be a full member of a band (possibly didn't like touring?). He did appear on TOTP though miming to all 3 of the hits in the chart.

popchartfreak and Earl Purple, I am sorry to report that the widely quoted triple appearance of Tony Burrows on a single episode of Top Of The Pops is a myth.
Brotherhood Of Man's debut appearance on TOTP was on Thursday 29th January 1970. This was Edison Lighthouse's first week at #1, so Burrows scored a double that week.
The following week was Edison Lighthouse only.
12th February featured White Plains and Edison Lighthouse, but no BHOM.
19th was BHOM's turn alongside Edison Lighthouse, but no White Plains.
26th reverted to White Plains and Edison Lighthouse, and this was the latter's final week at the top.
All three were in the Top 10 simultaneously, on the chart dated w/e 28th February (EL @ #1, WP @ #9 and BHOM @ #10), so it is understandable how the story arose.
