We've all seen medal tables for Olympic games but what if there was a points table as well? Well now there is! I'm going to compiling and posting a points table for the 2016 Rio Olympics. I'll be revealing the scores on a sport-by-sport basis, with a table for each sport as well as a running total as each is revealed. The system awards points to the top 8 nations in each event, with 8 points for 1st, down to 1 point for 8th. Note that it is the top 8 nations, rather than top 8 athletes. That means only a team's highest placed athlete counts towards the table. That means if a country wins gold and silver in a particular event, they will just score the 8 points for 1st, and whichever nation finishes 2nd would receive 7 points and we keep going until we have the top 8 nations. In events where you have to go back through rounds to find the top 8, various tie-breaking methods will be used, depending on the nature of the event. The IOC groups swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming together as "Aquatics" but I am scoring them separately, meaning there is a total of 31 sports. The scores will be revealed in alphabetical order according to the list of sports, meaning we will be starting with archery and finishing with wrestling. 86 teams won a medal in Rio. How many more will find a place on the points table? We are about to find out... All points are based on the most recent official results after the implementation of disqualifications due to doping violations. Top team per sport: ARCHERY South Korea ATHLETICS United States BADMINTON China BASKETBALL United States BOXING Uzbekistan CANOEING Germany CYCLING Great Britain DIVING China EQUESTRIAN Germany FENCING Russia FOOTBALL Germany GOLF Great Britain GYMNASTICS Russia HANDBALL France HOCKEY Netherlands JUDO Japan MODERN PENTATHLON France ROWING Great Britain RUGBY SEVENS Great Britain SAILING France SHOOTING Italy SWIMMING United States SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING Russia TABLE TENNIS China TAEKWONDO South Korea TENNIS United States TRIATHLON Great Britain VOLLEYBALL Brazil WATER POLO Italy WEIGHTLIFTING China WRESTLING Russia

ARCHERY (4 events) bold = team scoring its first pointsitalic = team that didn't win a medal at the 2016 Olympicsmedal count in brackets (gold-silver-bronze) 1. South Korea 32 (4-0-1) 2. United States 13 (0-1-1) 3. Chinese Taipei 11 (0-0-1) 3. France 11 (0-1-0) 5. China 10 5. Italy 10 5. Mexico 10 8. Australia 8 (0-0-1) 9. Germany 7 (0-1-0) 9. Netherlands 7 9. Russia 7 (0-1-0) 12. Japan 5 13. Great Britain 3 13. India 3 13. Indonesia 3 16. Brazil 2 17. North Korea 1 17. Spain 1 The archery events were knockout competitions, after an initial ranking round to determine the seedings. To decide 5th-8th place in each event, a cumulative set difference was used between the losing quarter-finalists and if necessary, last 16 losers. Each set consists of 3 arrows per archer with the highest scoring participant winning the set and being awarded 2 points. If a set was tied, both archers were awarded 1 point. The first archer to score 6 points won the match. If the scores were tied at 5-5 after 5 sets, a sudden death arrow was used to determine the winner. South Korea took a clean sweep, winning all 4 gold medals on offer. GB's 3 points came thanks to Naomi Folkard reaching the quarter-finals in the women's competition. She was beaten 7-1 by eventual gold medalist Hye-Jin Chang.

Trinidad & Tobago 26 19. Ukraine 26 The USA finish a long way clear in the athletics table, being consistently competitive across the board. They scored points in every single track event, only missing out in the walks, throwing events and heptathlon. Jamaica dominated the sprint events and Kenya the long distance events but with both now having had their strongest sport, we can expect to see them slide down the overall table. Despite finishing 6th on the athletics medal table, GB were an excellent 2nd on points, regularly scoring in events where they didn't win a medal. Bahrain's team of highly-paid ringers brought them a decent points total while the sole Russian athlete that was allowed to compete picked up a point in the women's long jump. After taking maximum points in archery, South Korea fail to score a single point in athletics. With 2 sports gone, 82 teams are on the points table, just 4 short of the final number on the medal table in 2016.

Malaysia get off the mark with 3 silver medals while Denmark had a very impressive showing. A surprise bronze medal in the men's doubles gave GB some useful points as they stay 2nd, with the USA failing to score for the first time so far. South Korea recover from drawing a blank in athletics by scoring points in every event, despite winning just one bronze medal. 84 teams have now scored points.

Ukraine 27 The men's and women's basketball tournaments consisted of 12 teams, split into 2 groups of 6, with the top 4 in each group going through to the quarter-finals. As expected, the American stars cruised to gold in both the men's and women's tournaments, winning every game, with Serbia and Spain getting the other medals. China qualified for both tournaments but missed out on points after failing to make it out of the group stage. GB was not represented in Rio, failing to even reach the qualifying tournaments after funding was completely cut following London 2012.

I think they do this with the athletics. Helps to rank countries to see how many places they get in other competitions.
Also I believe the top 8 in the Olympics get certificates of merit.

I think they do this with the athletics. Helps to rank countries to see how many places they get in other competitions. They do, though they don't limit it to one per country in each event so 21 points can be earned in a single event for a clean sweep of the medals. Unsurprisingly, given their 14 gold medals, the USA topped the points table at last year's World Championships, almost 200 points ahead of Kenya in 2nd and Jamaica 3rd. GB were 6th, helped by a typically British five 4th place finishes, and were the top European nation again.

However, neither scored any points in the three women's categories. GB had mixed fortunes, winning a medal of each colour but only having one other boxer reach their respective quarter-final. The once-dominant USA had very similar results. In Olympic boxing, both losing semi-finalists are awarded a bronze medal. For the purposes of this list, performance throughout the tournament in terms of rounds won/lost has been used as a tie-breaker. The same applies for losing quarter-finalists. If there is still a tie, the boxer who lost to the higher-ranked opponent gets the additional point. The number of teams with at least one point is now 90, exceeding the number that won a medal at the Games.

Slovakia was the top nation in the slalom events, scoring points in all 4, just ahead of Great Britain. Germany was the strongest in the sprint events, winning 7 medals, including 4 golds. Overall, GB had a solid showing, winning a gold and silver in both slalom and sprint to remain in 2nd place behind the USA. 92 teams now have at least a point.

Each has individual and team events, though as fencing is only allocated 10 events at the Olympics, the governing body uses a rotation system to determine which two team events are left off the Olympic programme. Russia topped the points table thanks to their 4 golds. Again, the USA picked up useful points without winning a gold medal. Fencing is not a sport that GB has a history of doing well in but Richard Kruse narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the foil and was part of the trio that finished 6th in the team event.
