At the weekend there was a Star-Studded Birthday Concert for what would have been the 74th birthday of David Bowie, virtually 5 years since his passing. Put together by his sometime pianist/keyboardist Mike Garson (1973-75, 1993-2004). But he was one member of the 2003-4 touring band not invited back for the private sessions for what became his surprise (certainly to most DB fans including myself) The Next Day comeback album. Whilst David Bowie was alive, (and his estate have carried on in a similar manner) they don't endorse these sort of tribute concerts or albums. Suffice to say there were a host of Bowie devotees turned musicians who turned down the opportunity of appearing at this "virtual" concert (Arcade Fire; Robert Smith; St Vincent; Beck; Frank Black; Lorde; etc). So some of the guest singers were interesting choices from obvious fans Duran Duran; Boy George; to Perry Farrell; Trent Reznor up to Adam Lambert; & Yungblud. But the one that got the biggest reaction .... but not necessary a positive one was by an artist you can't imagine ever being influenced by David Bowie & his output... Gary Barlow!
Curiously, this concert got a very positive reception in the media, which was very much not the case of hardcore Bowie fans. Or indeed Bowie's son film director Duncan Jones whom in a twitter conversation said (to him his Dad was David Jones, so he talks about David Bowie in the third person like an actor's character) "That's the problem. It's put on for and enjoyed by people who don't actually know Bowie. These are essentially Sunday Night At The Palladium for the ironic 2020s."
