Jonas Blue 'Fast Car' is the most recent travesty although it's arguable that it did significantly better than Tracy Chapman who has sold a lot on downloads. I would also say Gareth Gates was in the same category.
Mary J Blige made no.2 with U2's 'One' and that was pretty rank.

I had thankfully forgotten about the Smurfs track. It's quite literally excrement!

'I wanna be a hippy' is definitely weird for a top 10 and as for the video - words fail me! The Top of the Pops censored both the words 'Stoned' and 'Marijuana' meaning that the track was even more gibberish than in its normal form. The people behind this were responsible for the equally strange but more charming 'Tricky Disco' with its cute alien robot.

An unlikely juxtaposition brought about a #24 hit in 1995: Johnny Mathis meets German happy hardcore That is one annoying track like the one I'm going to next post. I remember it from the time it was out.

I like it but very underwhelming start on YouTube and Spotify both in U.K./US. Cute lyric video.

But talking about genuine top 10 singles this one I just cannot fathom why - although I was only very casually following the charts when I saw this on Top of the Pops. I quite like it but just seems too different from anything else to be a hit - a bit like that O Superman.

Kate's brilliant bizarre single about the plight of Aboriginies with weird chants, animal noises and vocals through the shredder and Rolf Harris on digeridoo sadly failed to make the top 40. She really tried to make 'The Dreaming' a hit and from interviews around that time is almost uncharacteristically bitter about it being ignored by radio.

Eurythmics - 'Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)' was a quite a bizarre single, especially for a lead single, but in a fantastically good way I love quirky female artists but never been a fan of Eurythmics/Annie Lennox but I LOVE this and one of the most intriguing singles of the 80s!

I would have gone for Stressed Out but that's taken. I'm going to go ultra commercial but great pop songs and bizarrely both featuring Sean Paul...
Sia/Sean Paul - Cheap Thrills Clean Bandit/Sean Paul/Anne Marie - Rockabye

I associate this song with psycho Trevor and Little Mo in Eastenders. Hmmm, like the harmonies and ending powerful but would skip it normally. 5/10

I'm probably ridiculously late to this party but thought I'd give my 2ps worth. I actually quite like it and it is extremely catchy and I love the early 90s house vibe. I like the weird sounds that come half way through. I also liked Drake's 'Take Care' and 'Started from the bottom' mainly due to the atmospheric backing. His two other singles at the moment are far duller.
8/10

I would have thought Radiohead would be far likelier to win here compared to 1D.

I would lke to see a bit more metal in our top 40 Lol think you'll be waiting a VERY long time in today's chart. Disturbed making the top 40 was because of very high sales to make up for poor streaming. And that was a cover of a well known track. The days the likes of Slipknot, Pantera and Marilyn Manson could get a top 40 hot with a typical release of theirs are long over.

Thanks - still not sure it was the show Im thinking of which I'm not sure if Casey Kasem presented. The one I'm thinking of it counted down the U.S. top 10 albums as well as singles and featured Pink Floyd's Division Bell on one show so it was definitely on during 1994...

Wasn't there an American top 10 show shown on UK TV late at night in the 90s? Or was that a British show featuring the U.S. charts. I remember something like that from my student days!

Identical chorus although Ed has the better voice and because of the verses better song overall. They're both a bit Chasing Cars too..

She's probably going to make that money back with interest for her record company, even if there's a decline in sales unless she does an Ethiopian nose flute album she'll have a good audience.

In a way its refreshing after a period when all videos were "shocking" and over sexualised - see Gaga, Miley and Rihanna that it's more about the music. Anyway isn't everyone to interested in playing with their phones to watch a whole video in one go nowadays
