Cranberries were rounded on for some pretty ropey lyrics and the serious pained over earnest Delores was mocked. That said there has always been a bit of a British thing knocking serious women stars - Tori and Alanis in particular. We never got into the Lilith Fair thing here.
As for original topic, I'm a pretty big Coldplay fan who are criticised by many but their songs are just so good and a lot of their stuff is pretty convincing art rock especially parts of Viva Le Vida ad Ghost Stories.

Great song. Never heard of it before. A bit too laid back for radio I would have thought but captivating.
I have a soft spot for early 90s Brit soul. As well as Innocence (who deserve their own thread), Brand New Heavies and The Chimes, I love this beautiful no. 49 hit from the Soul Family Sensation I have to dig out once in every six months or so.

Well I thought it was a nice song and video - people are so willing to take offence all the time.

really sucks that Sarah's Angel never was a UK hit, was top 5 in the US and it's the kinda song everyone knows... just checked nd peaked at #36 in the UK bizarre no one's covered on XF... And the #36 placing was largely due to a dance remix. Certainly played that on the Chart show.

A few more non-US acts who were much bigger in the US than the UK: Floetry (UK duo who had 2 top 20 albums and a top 25 single in the US at a time when hardly any UK acts were getting success in the US, but only reached #73 in the UK) And one of Floetry's singers Marsha Ambrosius from Liverpool had a no.2 and no.12 Billboard album in the last 5 years but neither did a thing here. Never heard anything from either the band or solo artist. Must check her stuff out.

Loads of Christian and country acts could figure.
I would go for Canadian Sarah McLachlan who only had one top 20 here as a lead artist 'Adia' and minimal album success but she had 2 top 5s there and many multi platinum albums. Methinks she is a bit too earnest for the UK although that said Dido was massive.
Of course 'Silence' made the top 3 with Delirium but that was largely due to the Airscape dance remix and very atypical

I found the Blackstar video a bit too creepy for my liking but do prefer the video and song for this. looks understandably in a lot of pain.

I know know he had a top 10 hit a few years back with that sax player but I thought this was going to be massive. Radio were hammering it, people I knew were raving about it and then it limped in at 36!

Another mysterious dance record with a strong classical/religious/philosophical theme to it. Made top 20 just after Christmas 95.

Totally forgotten dance track from Hondy 'No Access'. Not sure why she is singing about herself. Wow I have completely missed this thread and just reviewing it so may bump other songs but I absolutely love Hondy's 'No Access' - completely bonkers but mysterious yet really catchy. It reminds me a bit of Army of Lovers' 'Crucified' with the camp but also quite serious religious imagery stuff. Was at the time when records flew in and out the top 40 - blink and you miss it. Not a thing about them on the Internet either and not even the full promo. Also never had heard of Robbie Robertson - very Tom Waits like.

I quite like the original of Professional Widow. It's a real WTF track which sounds like she is having a breakdown on record. It fits well into the angsty first half of Boys for Pele.
The remix is great too in a different way - it was amazing when she got to no.1 with it. I loved it when TOTP played the video which was a compilation of her other videos. I hadn't seen the likes of Hey Jupiter or God then (was difficult to see videos pre You Tube) and the clips of the burning buildings, her looking sultry in the car and the snakes and rats seemed intriguing.
Tis strange that she never got another top 40 hit after the amazing Spark. It all went wrong for her single wise afterwards - quite often due to record company cock ups. Raspberry Swirl was cancelled at the last second. Glory of the 80s had problems with the CD Singles playing the wrong B sides - plus poor choice of a single anyway. A Sorta Fairytale (which only had 1 CD and no B side) had notorious problems with stocking it - people couldn't find it in any record stores. Finally, Strange Little Girl was planned for release then moved back a few times and then cancelled.

she´s done amazing things post-Professional Widow, aka my least fav song of hers... the album that came after that, From The Choirgirl Hotel, is probably her best, also Scarlet´s Walk a few years later was magnificent! My top 3 albums have to be From the Choirgirl Hotel, Under the Pink and Scarlet's Walk. Worst has to be The Beekeeper. Didn't mind Abnormally Attracted to Sin (really good tracks there although it gets a lot of stick) and I don't think Unrepentant Geraldines is that great.

I went to see her in concert this weekend in a small castle in the middle of nowhere in Denmark. She even played my request (Cooling), best show ever!!!! think i´ve seen her around 30-40 concerts the last album is pretty decent too Wow - that's amazing. I'm so jealous. She seems to have forgotten about the UK for the latest tour - I saw her in Nottingham last year and I heard her play Cooling. Was in the second row as I got an upgrade of seats.
Seen her in about 15 concerts. First one Royal Albert Hall 98.

This entered the top 40 last week and looks set to climb this week. I had heard it before somewhere but don't remember where exactly. It's an absolutely beautiful track a mix of happy summery chill out and world music vibes. Conrad's got a lovely and mysterious voice. I hope it eventually goes top 10.

Never liked him - he was always a supertw@t. Tony Mortimer was the only one of the band with any real vision.
